So the truck with a design that only a mother could love is supposedly starting production in mid 2023.
For those keeping score at home:
In 2019 it was going into production by the end of 2021In 2021 it was going into production by the end of 2022In 2022 it is going into production by mid 2023
At least the timeline is decreasing each time so that’s something, right?

A lot of it probably has to do with the factory in Texas. That factory is a monster and it is going to take time to get it producing. They obviously decided not to build another line out at Fremont.

Maybe, mostly though it’s been design tinkering.
They have finally settled on a “final design”. Supposedly.
The casting machines for the CT were only recently delivered a few weeks ago. They are the largest casting machines of their type ever built. Even the machines for the Model Y are pretty new. It will be interesting to see if they operate as planned. It is definitely something new in the automotive industry, which could pay off big time in the long run.
Part of it is Elon time. Same thing happened with the Falcon 9 rocket and is happening again with Starship and landing on Mars. A difference is that for SpaceX he has a strong COO who comes out to answer questions after Elon speaks. She always says that any schedule that Elon proposes is an optimistic, best case that will be very challenging to achieve (ie impossible).
But These are even more difficult than normal times. Between the new factory and supply chain issues it made sense to hold off on introducing a new product. Other manufactures have put out new vehicles in the past couple of years and struggle to produce more than a handful.
I am no metallurgy expert, but l find it remarkable that they are gonna use big cast parts cost-effectively in a high end auto. Because, typically, cast parts are far worse in strength to weight compared to forged, extruded, drawn, stamped, rolled, etc metal parts and compared to formed and welded/bonded sheet metal part assemblies designed for the same purpose, out of similar alloys.
By the time it goes to production it will be obsolete.
Tesla doesn’t do 7 year cycles for models. They’re still selling the Model S which came out in 2012. Of course the new ones have better components but the body style is the same.
Right, but by the delay gave other manufacturers time to catch up and pass them.

Sure but part of it’s original selling feature was tons of power for a pickup at a reasonable cost.
They were hoping to steal Ford and Chevy customers. Well Ford has and Chevy will beat them to the market.

Supply chain / plant issues. BS Elon has done this with I believe EVERY Tesla Model. None of them launch close to when he first says they will. He is very big on over promising and under delivering. He lives on they Hype.
In other EV truck news about real products. FEDEX has moved out of testing EV’s and into daily use.
