CX wheel question

OK, I’m a bit confused.

I’m looking for a set of disc brake wheels for my new CX bike. This is a little difficult because it has 130mm spacing and 700c wheels. I know a guy who runs a 135mm spaced rear hub on his CX bike and says that I shoudl be able to do the same (my frame is Ti his is XO) supposidly the disc will still line up as long as I don’t re-space the axel.

So, since it is hard to find 130mm spaced disc hubs I’ve been looking at 135mm wheels, but that poses the problem of if it is a MTB wheel it si 26" and not 700c. I was reading along and saw sometihing that said a 29er wheel is the same size (I’m assuming diameter) as a 700c. So does that mean that as long as I have clearance for a wider rim I can run a set of 29er wheels on my CX bike?

thanks

There are a number of guys running Stan’s ZTR 355 29er rim on their cross bikes tubeless, so yes it’ll work just fine. I will throw 700c cross tires on my 29er sometimes for a pit bike.

I can’t say if the 135mm spacing will work or not though.

Call Reynolds and they will build you a wheel

You are not confused. You’ve just discovered one of the reasons that folks don’t use disks in cross: wheel choice is limited. With canti’s all your reasonably stout road wheels work.

UCI doesn’t allow disc brakes and I think USAC is moving in the same direction. If the UCI and USAC embraced disk brakes you would see a much better selection but a good set of rim brakes works well enough for most people in most conditions.

Actually UCI prohibits disc brakes in the elite clas only, and those competing for UCI points series. I’m neither, and there are not alot of UCI goverened races around here anyway (actually there may not be alot of UCI races anywhere if they don’t make nice with the pro teams).

I was commenting in regards to market forces for the limited selection, not necessarily that you wouldn’t be allowed to use them if you had them. A few years more and more high-end bikes were coming down the line with disc brake tabs, but that trend seems to have reversed a bit because so few people actually use them. We have NO UCI races in lowly New Mexico, but you still don’t see any disc brake usage.

“Actually UCI prohibits disc brakes in the elite clas only…”

No, UCI prohibits disc brakes entirely, it’s just that in the US only elite races are run under a UCI sanction. For right now, you’re fine with your discs, but eventually the USCF will probably adopt the UCI regs across the board - they seem to be heading in that direction in the other disciplines of the sport.

To actually answer your question, there are 130 spaced disc hubs available from a few sources, and you can buy 130 spaced 700c disc wheels from a couple of sources as well, including FSA and Easton. I would suggest asking at the LBS to see what they can get for you.

You should be OK cramming a 135 spaced hub into your frame, but it is quite likely that you will experience rotor alignment issues if you try and switch back and forth between 130 and 135 spaced wheels.

I thought I read that, but I did see a girl at the Zipp OVCX Harbin Park race yesterday (UCI 1 with all kinds of “foreign” sounding officials there) with discs on. Maybe they missed her, but they seemed pretty aggressive/picky to me for sure (shoulder numbers for all, etc.)

At any rate, Katie just stomped the women’s field as usual and Powers is a stud!
