CX: any downside to using a long-cage rear derailleur?

I mostly use this bike as a commuter, but may get onto some light trails soon. I see most (all?) stock CX rigs set up w/ a road rear derailleur. I’ve got a 9-speed rear shifter, and have thus far used an old, now needing replaced, XT rear derailleur.

Will the long cage cause any problems?

Single ring up front, if it matters.

When racing, particularly on remounts, I experienced several dropped chains (off the front ring even with a front guide) until I replaced my long cage rear with a short cage. David K

I always get it when cutting through a lawn or hopping curbs. Might need to try and dig up an older 9-speed road derailleur then.

Any idea how that compares to a MTB long cage? I really don’t have that much range to deal with, as it’s a single ring up front.

RD are shorter than the mountain bike derailleurs. My long cage Ultegra accomodates the 27cog max. Most touring road bikes use XT to accomodate the larger cogs, up to 34.
