Cutting Helmet Straps

Just got a new Giro Ionos, once properly adjusted, the extra strap coming off the buckle is wayyyyy long. Anyone ever cut them? Seems you could cut it, and then melt the end to prevent fraying. Anyone with any experience with this?

Thanks!

Yes, cut and then use a lighter to melt the end of the strap. Simple as that.

yes cut them. but, i use a fancy candle lighter clicker thing to melt the end. the ends are then 213% more aero because the concentrated flame allow a more aero shape to form. FMMV.

A little neater method is to get an old putty knife (old because it will warp) heat it up with a propane torch until it glows, then just put the strap down on a block of scrap wood and push the knife through it where you want the cut. This will allow you to cut at any angle you want and leave a very neat edge. Works on all nylon straps.

.

Not only do I trim the strap, I also sew a single loop for the buckle.
I also ripped off those bulky plastic things below your ear and just sewed the straps together at the right angle.
Much more comfortable and never needs re-adjustment.

“… never needs adjustment” - what about athletes riding outdoors in the cold winter and needing warm head wear? Could be a tight helmet half of the year…

Simple…shave head in winter…grow fro in summer. Much easier than adjusting helmet…

If you have something to shave ;-(

In addition to cutting and burning the edges I also use electrical tape and wrap the last inch that is left sticking out to the other strap.
