He claims that Lake Placid has more climbing than IMOO… and visually it looks like he’s right. I know IMOO has 6,000 feet of climb on the bike, anyone know the stats for the other IM races (namely Lake Placid)
Those usually make a course look worse than it is. If I had seen that before registering for Lake Placid I would have hesitated to sign up. It is interesting to have two bike courses overlapping to compare them.
Okay I did ironman usa, wisconsin and florida.
I carried a garmin foretrex gps(not forerunner but foretrex 201 basically looks like forerunner but mainly plain gps no run or bike specifics.). on my bike both races. Using Topofusion software here were the measurements
Topfusion climbing anaylsis gives 6 different methods of computation(don’t ask me which are which use for comparison doesn’t matter.
It appears usa has more climbing… here it is:
USA
TopoFusion: 7315 ft
Straight GPS: 7315 ft
Straight DEM: 11068 ft
Maptech: 9204 ft
TopoUSA: 11196 ft
Custom Algorithm: 11068 ft
Wisconsin
TopoFusion: 6212 ft
Straight GPS: 6213 ft
Straight DEM: 9222 ft
Maptech: 6572 ft
TopoUSA: 9364 ft
Custom Algorithm: 9222 ft
On polar s720i, I have a total of 1770m of ascent for the 2 loops which would break into 885m per loop. This would converter to 5807 feets (2 loops) and 2903.5 per loop.
IMLP 8339ft climbing, Average grade 2, Climbing distance 55.06 (Note this map isn’t 100% correct going off of the IM USA sight I could only get the route to come out to around 107 total miles)
IMWI 6422ft climbing, Average grade 2, Climbing distance 55.08 (This one is prett close at 112.66)
Just from these two I’d say LP has a bit more climbing. Going simply by the map I’d say that IMWI has a few climbs that are steeper but much shorter, rollers. LP has long constant climbs.
