Crux Chainring-48 or 50t

Hey ST
Quick question for you cycle cross guys

I have a stybar specialized crux but want to change the front chain ring. What is the biggest one that can be used? Is it a 48t or 50t?

Dont want to make the mistake and buy the wrong one.

Thanks for the input

Ryan

The CruX has a 110 mm BCD crank. Any chain ring in that size will fit.

If you are using the bike for cross 48 is very large. 44 is about as big as most pros use and some of them don’t go that big.

I typically run a 46 / 38 on my cross bike and have that on an Alu CruX right now. For a single ring I usually run a 40.

I ride a alu Crux with a 38t single ring (130bcd) and 12-25t cassette. If you have a 110bcd, you can ring up to a 52t. Good luck.

Its my significant others bike now and she is getting into cycling road. This is a bit of a Frankenstein bike.

I should have mentioned this but it is running a sram force crank so its 130 BCD

50 should fit i think…

If you are worried about frame clearance, then a 50 tooth chainring will clear just fine. As far as your crank is concerned, you can fit just about any chainring as long as it is the right BCD.

There is no 50t on a 130bcd. The smallest outer ring available is a 46t off a cross crank.

You can run anything from a 48t and up on a 130mm BCD crankset. Smallest ring you can run is a 38t.

38/48 if you’re riding gravel. I’d go 38/52 if y’all are riding road. You can make bigger changes with bigger cassettes (1 tooth in the back is 3 in the front) to make things easier for her, so at the smallest, I’d go 11-28 till she gets used to things and wants to go bigger.

So there should not be any clearance issues with the FD if i go for a 52t front cassette?

My bike mechanic said the largest front chainring that can fit on the Crux is a 48t

Gathering from what has been said here that is not true?

I ride a 53/39 on my crux. no “clearance” issues, at least not with a GXP BB on a 2012 aluminium crux. 11/28 cassette, 39t inner ring for the dirt, and on the road, 11-25. decent setup, i do most of my winter mileage on this.

I recognize this is an older thread, but wondering if you were able to mount a 52T or 53T ring on the Crux frame? Thanks!

I was only able to put a 50 on. Seems like the 52 may be cutting it a little close as the hanger won’t go high enough to allow for proper clearance. Now this may not be true but I have not had any luck with a 52.

Thanks for the reply! Sounds like you did not try the 52T, but were able to install and successfully use a 50T? Not ideal, but may allow me to keep up with my roadie friends during CX’s off-season. Thanks again!

I’m meeting my mechanic this weekend to install a 52T on my Trek Crockett. I currently have a 46/36 - 11-28 and when I do cross races, I stay in the 36 100% of the time. So I want the 52 so I can ride with the roadies too. Never considers there would be a clearance issue. Have me worried now.

To be honest, you probably wont notice the 50/52 anyways. I have never run out in normal conditions on my 50 and only have a 53 on my TT. If anything maybe run a 28-11T cassette if you are not already?

I did only try to put on the 50t as clearance was minimal. Each bike is a little different though.

Echo what Malfara said: I got a 2015 crux and wanted to replace the stock cx crankset with a ‘road’ crankset and the largest ring that would fit was 50T. The limitation was the positioning of the braze-on derailleur mount (at least with shimano 6800 FD) – 52/53 scraped the FD outer plate when positioned at maximum height. No major stress, 50/34 was fine for me. If you’re reeeeaaaally keen you could always get the FD mount moved, but clearly that’s a lot of effort for minimal/no return. This is not the case with all brands/models of cx bikes – some will fit 52/53T as standard.

Thanks for the added input! I already have one Crux and am contemplating another as a pit bike for CX racing. Would like to get a bike out of the garage – between mine and our kids, we’ve got 11 right now – and trading in a road bike for a Crux would at least allow us to stay net even. I don’t do much road racing, so as long as I can keep up on the road training sessions, I think I’d be fine with the 50T. It’d be good for working on my spin!
