Can anyone recommend a cruise ship that has good facilities for training? Here is what I have in mind:
-
Lap pool (of course)
-
Weight room (meat-head style: with squat rack, benches and dumbbells)
-
I would like to bring my bike with power-tap and wind trainer - is this allowed?
Thanks, Ellie
LOL, you’re dreaming. The pools on the cruises I’ve been on are glorified spas, like 15ft x 30ft max. No free weights either…lots of treadmills, lifecycles, and weight machines. Have no idea about the bike, but there isn’t much room in the rooms, either. Good luck.
None of the cruise ships have what you’re looking for…
Princess Cruise Lines actually has an endless pool on several of their ships. I don’t know about any of the other cruise lines.
You’re not going to find too much in the way of weight rooms. But for the week or less that you’re on the ship, you can at least get a decent workout in on the circuit machines.
The bike would be a pain, since the luggage process is kind of a zoo. I suppose if you had it in a shipping case, you could treat it as regular luggage. Finding space in your cabin would be a trick unless you’re in a suite.
Good luck.
You are right, I really don’t need a weight room. But I want a lap pool.
I’ve been on four cruises on four different lines. All I can say is good luck trying to maintain fitness. For some reason, all the fat bodies decide they are going to get in shape on their cruise. They clog up all the treadmills and exercise bikes. Even if there were an endless pool, it probably would be booked most all the time. The treadmills and exercise bikes usually have a 20-minute time limit.
Think of your cruise as “active rest” and just try not to eat and drink TOO much.
If you want to get out of shape, by all means, take a cruise. If you want tri fitness, San Diego, Lanzarote, Majorca or Gold Coast are the vacation destinations of choice (although I would argue that the Hautes Alpes beats them all) …
