son is doing PE this semester at high school. The class includes Crossfit coaching two days a week, at a Crossfit gym down the street.
This disturbs me given the Crossfit history of rhabdomyolisis and Crossfit certification that consists of a two day course, with no prerequisite training or experience. Two Crossfitters I know have sustained crippling back injuries in workouts. Pukey the clown isn’t appropriate to PE classes.
Anyone have any experience with Crossfit and teenagers ?
Is it appropriate to do Crossfit for PE do you think ?
It’s a fad but I doubt they will push your kids to puking. Could be a great into into Oly lifting. If they like it get them a real coach to work on form in the weekends. Fantastic spot.
Also I suspect less Crossfitters die than triathletes doing the sport.
All depends on the instructor. It could be wonderful it could be terrible. But, that can be said for any high school course. If they slow it down and really focus on technique and learning then it will be good.
My daughter started crossfit in HS and loved it. She did it on the side and continues those type of workouts now in her Senior Year of college.
I totally agree the quality of coaching is key and also how much the person tries to follow the directions/instruction. Also how many coaches they will have with how many kids. I would want a low ratio. They also could do body weight type things that tend to be safer. Avoid kipping pull ups so many shoulder injuries. Both my husband and I had injuries from CrossFit.
I’m not sure how I feel. My kids gym classes in HS was a joke. I would rather have something more substantial. I would check out the coaching and the program.

thanks all - Kathy, we were spoiled by our older son’s PE class, coached by a guy with advanced degrees in exercise science - smart and an excellent coach, got my boy interested in working out as well as swimming.
I’ve emailed the PE teacher with my concerns and will try to go to a class to see what is going on…
