So with the silly season upon us, and having some time on my hands, I’m seriously considering building up a cross bike from some parts lying around. Got a catalogue from Blue, I know Speedy’s a distributor up around these parts.
-Anyone have any experience with the Blue 'cross bikes?
-Speedy, what’s one of these frame and forks going to run me?
He carries the entire Blue line. I just bought the AL road frame for a crit bike. I’m very impressed with the quality, and perhaps moreso, the price. The cross bike looks pretty cool. The paint quality on all their bikes is very high.
The CX 5.5’s are sold out However I have an order coming in by air of the new CX 6.5’s very soon.
As I understand it for 2006 there will be a number of improvements:
Colour change. The Blue will now be the same as found on the RC5-AL
Much lighter carbon fork
Rear brake cable stop bridge
Improved top tube cable stop placement
If you or anyone else want’s one let me know & I’ll tag one for you. We will work through a vendor of your choice. I will have stock soon & full stock is expected in late Feb.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
I’m on the 5.5 right now. Its not the lightest frame out there, but it is the best riding one I have encountered. For what you get, it is also a huge bargain. Blue is also a great company to work with and truly has an interest in putting out a great product at a reasonable price.
Ideally, I’d love to work with Sporting Life Bikes (because they’re my local LBS, and bend over backwards to accomodate me despite the fact I’ve never puchased a bike from them), or Wheels on Bloor (Radek’s a pretty solid guy). Let me know who else is available.
Another dumb question – do you usually use the same size cross that you would for road, or do you size down a size (generally)?
Let me talk to the guys at SL – I suspect I’m either a ML or a L in the bike. I’d also love to see what the frame price will end up being with them, as I’m looking at a number of options for putting together a CX bike.
Hey Paul, I spoke to SL Bikes, and their buyers are cool with buying the frame. I’m going to buy the bike through them and have them build it up.
I’ll be going in later this week with my road bike, so they can figure out if I’ll need a ML or L frame.
Can you contact Keith to discuss pricing and timing? Sporting Life’s number is (416) 485-4440. Ideally, I’d like to be training on this bike through the winter, so if Blue is going to air ship you some frames faster than the February delivery date, that would be great.
As well, does one usually go with the same size cranks one uses on the road, or a bit smaller for cross?
