Cranks? FSA K Force or Campy Record?

FSA K Force Campy Record Zipp (pricey)

Record or Zipp.

New Campy ultra torque cranks and bb. Record or Chorus either one.

Chorus - same as the Record but for chainrings. I had to get the Record though…

Campy Record
.

Before you make a decision be sure you read the December 4 edition of Velo-News, page 40 for Lennard Zinn’s interesting article on the new cranks and ceramic bearings. I think you’ll find the data and testing useful in making your decision.

The issue with FSA is not so much the quality of the bearings etc, but the reliability of the product. I’ve come across lots of issues with crank arms coming loose on the MegaExo models, more so than with the DA cranks.

Campy Chorus.

I agree - I’ve also had some problems with the left crank arm loosening on my FSA carbon cranks. They are fine otherwise. Heard tales of the Zipp’s delaminating.

Take a look at the Velo-News article. There is a sidebar that talks about the importance of correct crank installation, torque and the importance of frame alignment in crank performance.

I wager many of the current crank problems originate form someone opening the box, installing the crank on intuition and not reading the instructions and executing them with verbatim compliance to written procedure. The generatiion of cranks has to be installed in compliance with manufacturer’s instructions. Somoe of those instructions include bringin lthe bolts up to a specific torque, and then repeating that torqueing again later. If someone didn;t read those instructions they certainly can’t be expected to know to do that, but then again, the product can’t be expected to perform as expected either.

You are dead on correct about this one Tom. Most people dont re-torque the lug nuts on their car - and are supposed to as well.

yeah i know there’s a clause about checking the pinch bolts after every x miles and again every x miles. Still, i hate having to bring my big allen key with me on my rides all the time even though i do check them before i start moving off.

as an aside, i wonder how many mechanics tell their customers that they need to check the torque on their crank bolts… mine certainly didn’t… and came off during an ITU race. Good thing it was a multi-loop bike format so the walk back to T2 was short-ish (still took almost an hour)

I’m told that at least for the DA cranks, they made some improvements to XTR that may translate to better designs for the next gen DA cranks.

Ok rant over… Either way, i’d take the record cranks, even if they have to be square taper.

What length and what is your criteria?

None of the above - I’d chose DA or Stronglight.

Then again, I use SI Hollogram which is lighter and stiffer than everything else…

Ok rant over… Either way, i’d take the record cranks, even if they have to be square taper.

They are not square taper anymore. Their system is seemingly MUCH more trouble free than the Shimano way of doing things. Getting the installation spring out is a PITA first time you do it however (on the drive side BB cup)

As far as record vs. Chorus. Record is hollow, chorus isn’t. I’d choose any carbon campy crank over a FSA K Force

I’d take Veloce over FSA…

Not just hollow but “Ultra Hollow”…LOL…saves 36 grams at prices that would make a Columbian drug lord proud!

Campy shifts much nicer than FSA - I have both.

Do you have the special FSA Campy-compatible chainrings? The FSA Campy-compatible chainrings are machined and pinned to work best with Campy shifters.

My new road bike with an FSA crankset with FSA Campy-compatible chainrings shifts at least as well as my old road bike and tri bike which both have the 10-speed Campy records aluminum cranksets.

Never heard of 'em. I have what came with my SLK Mega EXO cranks, and my carbon pro compacts (ISIS). There was no option for “campy specific” on either set.
