Cramp in shoulder muscle, from running? please help!

gang, i’ve started running again (YAY!) and it’s going great.

yesterday I didn’t make it out till 1:30 pm, and ended up running in 92+ degree heat with high humidity. I don’t mind this, but did notice that i lost about 4 pounds just in the 30 minutes i was out. i thought i rehydrated properly.

later that night my husband and i went out to hear some jazz in which i drank about 3 glasses of red wine. now this morning i’ve got a major “cramp” in my shoulder–right on top in the muscle.

what in going on with this shoulder?

I remember in high school I used to get the same thing in my collar bone. my team mate told me it was an “oxygen debt cramp”. I’ve never really heard of such a thing, but this “cramp” in my shoulder is exactly what i had in high school in my collar bone–sometimes it would stay for a week, and it really hurt.

this one in my shoulder really hurts and it’s making me sick to my stomach as the day goes on.

i’ve eaten a banana, had water, eaten breakfast and so on.

what is this in my shoulder, how did it develop, and how can i make it go away???

please help–i’m desperate!

KC, could it just be a muscle cramp from the running? My shoulders sometimes cramp and get sore on longer runs, remember that most of us swing our arms when we run, which is exercise, which may cause sorenes if we haven’t done it for a while. I don’t know how to fix it except to stretch, try crossing your arm across your chest and then squeezing it with the other arm. That or talk nice to hubby and get him to give you a shoulder rub, btw men consider this foreplay, so be ready.

lol…thanks for responding. i’ll try some stretching and will ask for the shoulder rub (maybe–lol).

at least i know this has happened to others…bet it’s connected to the high heat and (like a dummy) running in it during it’s peak. 4 pounds is alot to loose in just 30 minutes.

it’s a good day to bake chocolate chip cookies.

stretch it out just like you would your legs. I get the same thing in one shoulder from an old injury. As long as I stretch it before I run Im ok

i have something akin to this, and it’s from hunching my shoulders somewhatn during the race run. i don’t usually get it from training—just in the extra effort involved in a race.
the solution is somewhere between stretching, and consciously trying to lower my shoulders during the run.

I get that when I run with Kate in the jogger, I tend to push with my left hand and so the shoulder goes up, and lo and behold, later that day or next my left shoulder is boned. Makes swimming hard, so I’m making hubby push now

Watch your form, make sure you aren’t shrugging up your shoulders.

While I hardly qualify as an expert, I occasionally have a cogent thought or two. If my aging memory serves me correctly, you had some issues and couldn’t run. Now that you have returned to the pack, it could be that you are a bit apprehensive about reinjuring yourself again despite the overt “YAY!” reflex. You could be holding some tension in your shoulders as you run and therefore precipitate the cramping. Stretch well before you run (well, duh) and have someone watch you to see if this is the case. You can also monitor yourself and consciously make sure that you are relaxing your shoulders when you run. I know this has been a problem for some of my runners who have returned after an injury and perhaps it is the case with you too.

any funky aerobic activities after the wine and jazz?

yes this could be the case. it was bloody hot when i went out–95 degrees and the humidity was over 100% (according to the news). it was hard, so i probably had my shoulders pulled up to push through the heat.

all i know is that this shoulder thing nearly made me sick today–it hurt all the way into my neck and then gave me a headache. it’s much better now after some stretching…just hope this doesn’t happen again, it sucked!!

thanks for feedback everybody!
