I recently got a new bike (Softride Classic TT 650), while test riding it in the parking lot the chain popped off. I put the chain back on and when I took the first pedal stroke down, the chain popped off and I jammed the chain between the frame and the small chain ring. My brand new bike has two large scratches. The metal is in showing and I am concerned that I cracked the frame. Is it possible to crack a frame by merely wedging the chain between the frame and small chain ring. Also, since the bike is so new (1 week old) and if I plan on having this bike for 4-5 years, is it possible that I could eventually do more damage to that area of the bike? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Impossible to tell over the internet but it would seem very unlikely that the frame could get cracked in this manner. Most likely it’s just a scratch and the first scratch on a new bike is always really annoying. You should take it to the LBS to let them evaluate.
