It really highlights the divide between us mortals and pro cyclists, and what kind of power is being produced, even after 3 weeks of the hardest racing/climbing, and being super, super skinny & lightweight.
URÃN’S TIME TRIAL – 6W/KG FOR 29 MINUTES
Urán’s power over the course of the time trial was absolute world-class. With 378w, 6.00w/kg average power and 389w, 6.17w/kg normalized power, he rode at his limit for 28:46 minutes.
Most impressive was the climb itself: He flew up the 1.1km-long ascent with 20 kph average speed on a 10 percent gradient. To achieve this, he produced 457w for 3:16 minutes—7.25w/kg! This is even more remarkable, considering that the effort was produced not from a rested state but after riding for 15 minutes at 6w/kg.
Well damn. I can hold that power for 2-3 minutes at most. I do 400W one minute intervals on the trainer. Hurts like hell and no way I could hold that power. I’m spent after 15 or so of those intervals, and the recovery from that effort affects tomorrow’s workouts too.
Also an important point is that Rigoberto is 5’8", 138lbs (1.73m, 63kg). I’m willing to bet most readers of this site aren’t this slight. So if you’re heavier than him, you’d need a LOT more watts to match this from a W/kg standpoint.
Nope…couldn’t do it.
Also can’t run a 5 minute mile…or whatever those Kenyans are running for an entire marathon.
Also can’t swim anywhere close to 1:02 for 100 meters…which is effectively the pace Katie Ledecky swam for the 1500m.
These guys are world class. I think it’s harder for most people to realize how fast pro cyclists are actually going though unless you actually try to ride with them when the gas is on.
I can do that for about 5 minutes but I passed his size at some point in 6th grade and kept growing. To match his w/kg I’d have do that half hour in the mid 500’s!
I’ve done 368 watts for 20 minutes, but I weigh around 168 pounds. The w/kg that these guys put out (doped or not) is plain stupid and on a completely different level.

That’s me too.
At 6’1 - getting down to 137 lb might not be so easy.
At 0% body fat I think I might still weigh
145lbs.

Clearly I should have tried out for the TDF.*
My statement discounts his effort was at 6.0w/kg while my FTP was at 4.2w/kg.* I also haven’t ridden more than 60 miles on consecutive days in my life.
** I am tall not fat.
According to this article. Lionel Sanders held 356 watts at the 70.3 worlds which was probably nearer 2 hours. I would think for him, 33 more watts for 1/4 of the time and not have to run afterwards should be doable. Perhaps I’m mistaken on that assumption.
I’m not a big Lionel Sanders fan, he’s great and all, but I wanted someone else to make that point so the silent people wouldn’t diminish Urán’s TT effort.
Sanders is a beast, but he there isn’t a comparison. His race weight is 165; Uran came in to the race at 138 and probably is more like 130 - 135ish right now. 3 weeks of racing and all of those kilometers and he can still do this. Just absolutely unreal.
Turns out the best triathletes are best at being triathletes. The best cyclists are the best at being cyclists.

So is what he did impressive, Inflated or should he be going to pro cycling?
For Lionel Sanders (@75kg) to match Rigoberto Uran, Sanders would need to do 450W for 29 minutes. On the 10% climb (1.1 km), Sanders would’ve had to do 543W for over 3 minutes. That might be possible in isolation, but not after riding 15 minutes for 450W.
I don’t see any pro triathlete riding this strong, ever. Bar Lance at his prime (who was only a cyclist at the time), I don’t see any pro triathletes coming anywhere close to that.
yes, or very close,ok, i’m 56 now so no…but back in the day, and i say that a lot now…i weighed 230 lbs…Rigo weighs 135…fwiw, his numbers aren’t remarkable for the company the keeps…guys that can’t hold his wheel on a climb with him can hold 400+ for 20 minutes…knowing when to do 389 watts in a race counts for a lot…what’s impressive is that the number isn’t higher…very efficient
