Could Tempur Pedic Bed be the reason for my back problems?

well…there it is…I never thought I’d ask this but…could Tempur Pedic Bed be the reason for my back problems? I’ve been having back issues for about a year now…loads of money spent on chiropractors etc etc etc and im still at square one…could my beloved Tempur Pedic mattress actually be the culprit??? does the fact you sink into the bad somehow get me outta wack regardless of all the facts about how great its supposed to be…?

Did you start having your back issues soon after you started sleeping in the bed?

that would be a simple way to know but no…i definitely hurt myself without knowing as i shovelled earth around to make my garden what is is…plus removing a skip load of limestone rocks by hand, by myself onto a wheel-barrow…so i hurt myself in the twisting motion no doubt…but the problem does not go away…no matter what…my wife wakes up with a sore back too often…

Our experience with a memory foam mattress was not good. It felt great while it was new but soon began to loose it’s support. The mattress developed alzheimers and lost it’s memory. The support was good in the middle where no one slept. When no one was on the bed it would resume it’s normal shape but it just wouldn’t provide the support it did when it was new. We gave it to Goodwill after 1 year of use.

How do you feel when you go on vacation and sleep in another bed? Oh yeah, you dont do vacations:) work work work. Thats probably the back problem right there, too much sitting…no?

Memory foam is not synonymous with Tempurpedic. I am considering a Tempurpedic bed as well so I would like to hear the experience of others.

LOV mine  I have 2 bulged disks in the low back- i have NO issues- I sleep soundly and wake up feeling GREAT- I always have issues when having to sleep on a conventional mattress though- makes trips not that great- I have the Tempurpedic and yes, not all memory foams are the same-buy the brand.
Original poster- it sounds like you tweaked your back doing the labor- you need to knock down the swelling/see an ortho. I wouldn’t ditch the mattress yet

Back problems are extraordinarily complex and very individual. To pin your problems on one thing, is a bit of s stretch. I have a hernniated disc in my lower back and have on and off back problems. My back is effected by what kind of bed I sleep in, but darned if I know what kind of bed. I travel a lot for business and sleep in a lot of different beds. I have slept on top-of-the-line wonder mattresses that have killed my back and I have slept on cheap ones that would at first feel think really bad, and they have been wonderful. So even with me, I really have no idea what sort of bed is best for me. We thought about investing in a Tempur ourselves, but at this point I am not sure. Perhaps something way less expensive may work as well or better!

I love mine…termpurpedic brand.

Hi–I’ve had a tempurpedic for about 10 years without noticable
“memory loss!” My SO loves it but she sleeps easily and without
moving. I like it OK but move a lot, which is difficult when you’re
half-sunk in a mold of yourself. If you’re struggling against it and
adopting a posture bad for the back, it might worsen the problem.

Not to hijack this thread, but does anybody have long-term experience with the “sleep number” bed? I like a firm bed and my wife likes not-so-firm. I think this could be a solution, but am hesitant that any bed that involves a pump and air bladders will not last for more than a couple years.

no guarantees, but my take on your situation:

you very likely hurt one of your spinal discs working.

but your current bed makes it worse but not letting your spinal discs ‘unload’ during rest and sleep. your soft tempurpedic bed acts on you like you are sleeping in a sagging hammock: there is still load on your spinal discs at night which is not a good thing for healing your back. because gentle traction (or unloading) of the spine seems to have a good record for helping discs recover from damage or injury.

a much harder bed, by keeping your back and body flat and straight, unloads your discs quite well. and this has been scientifically verified by studies of intradiscals pressures measured by invasive instrumentation in human test subjects.

so, yes, i think your bed is making things worse.

“because gentle traction (or unloading) of the spine seems to have a good record for helping discs recover from damage or injury.”

In my experience, a Tempurpedic bed does exactly that. It does not sag like sleeping in a hammock.

Haim

i follow you.

but in my experience, a tempurpedic bed does exactly that: it does sag like sleeping in a hammock.

and other folks on this thread seem to say nearly the same thing.

I have the Tempurpedic and yes, not all memory foams are the same-by the brand.

With all this talk about Tempurpedic…I thought I should throw this out there for those considering making the move to memory foam.

Novaform makes memory foam mattresses that are sold via Costco online. There are a few different models, but for reference, the top of the line in a KING is about $1200. That includes shipping (it comes compressed in a 3’x3’x4’ box!). Best part about buying at Costco, of course, is their return policy. In the case of a mattress that you ordered on-line, apparently they’ll come and pick it back up if you choose to return it…so you don’t even have to haul it to a store. We figured what the hell, what do we have to lose by at least trying this one before plunking down big money for Tempurpedic. We’re a few months in on our new one and really like it. I haven’t noticed my change in sleep patterns (as I seem to sleep well no matter what’s under me) but my wife seems to think she’s sleeping better and with less back pain. .02.

I’ve had a sleep number bed for a few years and love it. I have found that no matter what quality of mattress I owned, I would develop back problems over time sleeping on the same bed, same firmness. I ALWAYS felt better sleeping anywhere else but my bed. I change my sleep number ±5 once a month and have been sleeping better and feeling better when waking up (especially my back). My wife uses a different number on the other side of the king bed and she’s happy with it although she doesn’t have any back issues, etc. (my back issues have also declined since learning to sleep on my side, so my old bed was not the sole cause of my back issues, and the sleep number bed was not the only fix - back issues are always very complicated)

Downsides are the setup is a bit awkward, the price is ridiculously high for what the product is made out of, and the foam edges of the bed that surround the air mattresses tend to lose firmness over time, especially if you sit on the edge of the bed a lot.
However, sleep number customer service is awesome and they will replace any defective part immediately in my experience.

You could ask my ex… She has it. Personally I hated it. Couldn’t get comfortable on it. And then there’s a hard ridge, like a big wall, down the middle of the thing (but then again, maybe that’s why she liked it).

Water never loses its memory…

Best bed I ever had was an old king-size water bed. Wish I had it still. It really was like floating weightless all night.

what you say makes sense to me…in fact, i fell asleep on the floor the other night…on the carpet…and a few hours later i got up and wasnt stiff like i would be from the bed…mmmmmmmmmmmmm…what you say about unloading your discs makes a lot of sense to me…i will see what i can do…
