Cost for age grouper to travel to Kona for IMWC?

For those who traveled to Kona recently (e.g., last five years) for the IMWC, how much did it cost (race registration, transportation, hotel accommodations, food, etc) in total?

Race Entry: 650 (?)
Flight - ORD ->KOA: ~500
Bike Case Fee: ~200 round trip
1 BR Condo (Ali’i Drive ~2 miles from King K Hotel): ~100/ night
Rental Car: Too expensive.

Food: I plan to shop and prepare my own food. From memory on previous trips to hawaii with the most recent being 2007 - most groceries are a bit more expensive on the island - particularly meat and diary products. Maybe 10% to 15% more than mainland USA - perhaps higher I don’t recall exactly.

I spent around 3500 last year.

As above but also note that they also tend to jack up the prices a bit during the IM week especially acccomodation…

A pantload.

6-7K for a week for us. Could have been cheaper but probably not as convenient for the way we like to travel.

From Vancouver to Kona (booked in July)

Additional Flight for Wife - $711.97 (booked later on)
Bike Fees: $50 Each Way = $100

Daily Costs = A bit of a guess but normally around $8 Each for breakfast, $5 for coffee and bagel at hotel, $10 each for lunch (avg), had dinner at friends condo or shopped at supermarket (a little more expensive due to being on island) = Estimate approx cost $60 a day for food (combined) = $600
Post race - some merchandise and gifts for supporters at expo = $200 **
Post Race Days - Beer and Cocktails =
$150**
Gas = Approx $10 a day** = $100**
Parking at hotel and in Kona =** approx $8 a day = $80**
Misc. - bought a floor pump (brought back) c02 (left on island) and other items** = $100**
Entry fee = $600
Extra Awards Banquet ticket = $50

**Total cost for 10 nights for two people = **roughly $5500 (including entry)

add to this any normal pre race stuff (new tires, tubes, nutrition etc)

You could do cheaper than above and definitely more expensive. In terms of car rental the earlier you reserve or book the cheaper it is. If you think you may go next year look to reserve one early and you can always cancel it. We paid around $30 a day for our car (booked in July) had I waited would have been closer to $80 a day.

If you have snorkels bring them - great for post race recovery and saves renting snorkel and mask.
