Cordyceps

I saw some mention of these in another thread.

For doing a few searches on the product, they actually seem good.

Anyone tried them?

Cordycep tablets?

(I must admit I’m willing to try most things natural)

I have used them for mild asthma with good results
.

I bought some Rich Roll stuff with some inside. I think they actually worked. Like I had a 3rd lung. Weird stuff.

hmm interesting. I think thats where I heard about them.

Bloody expensive still.

Anyone else out there?

Is it legal for competition? I did a search on it and turned up this little gem…

“Many successful endurance athletes now use cordyceps routinely—including, it is believed, Lance Armstrong’s Team Postal during their record-breaking 7 Tour De France wins.”

yes it is legal
does not appear on WADA list nor global DRO search

Last of us.

I thought this thread was about something else.

I wouldn’t take them from just any source. Being a “miracle” herb, the potential for other crap mixed in there is pretty high. Not just dope, but crazy toxins. I’m sticking with beet juice for now.

is an ingredient of optygen hp …should b legal…it s only a mushroom
.

Also used for treated arrhythmias. Promising results, albeit no large RCTs yet (and likely none ever).

Me too. Wonder if you take too much if you end up a fungus-covered zombie. =)

It was… The new HP no longer has it.

I hope it works better than Rhodiola i.e. actually does something.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15118196

“It is concluded that 5 weeks of CordyMax Cs-4 supplementation has no effect on aerobic capacity or endurance exercise performance in endurance-trained male cyclists.”

It should be noted that the dosage was 3x the amount in the version of Optygen with cordyeps, and that it’s the same kind of cordyceps (CS-4)
.

“Subjects completed the TT significantly faster after R. rosea ingestion (R. rosea = 25.4 ± 2.7 minutes; placebo = 25.8 ± 3.0 minutes; p = 0.037). The mean RPE was lower in the R. rosea trial (R. rosea = 6.0 ± 0.9; placebo = 6.6 ± 1.0; p = 0.04). This difference was even more pronounced when a ratio of the RPE relative to the workload was calculated (R. rosea = 0.048 ± 0.01; placebo = 0.057 ± 0.02; p = 0.007).”

Another supplement that’s *supposed *to work - it did nothing for me. ^

Interesting that was in 2004.

Right in the middle of the Lance Era when they were reported using it.

Nice find. Thanks. Saved me $$$

So what supplements DO WORK?

To make you faster? Stronger? Better? None so far.

So what supplements DO WORK?

I’m not an expert, and this list is by no means exhaustive. But the cheapest ones may be the best, for the most part.

Caffeine works, particularly when you don’t ingest caffeine regularly: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9132918. Best for longer events since it seems to work by improving fat metabolism.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) works: http://jap.physiology.org/content/108/1/98.full (~10W or ~30 seconds in a 16K TT) But be careful with this one. I wouldn’t use acetaminophen in any event where you could get in a perpetual state of dehydration (e.g. IM) because it’s hard on the liver…don’t want to excessively stress your liver until the victory party.)

Beta-alanine may work: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3429803/ “Supplementation with β-alanine showed a significant increase in VO2 max (P<0.05) and a significant decrease in TTE and lactate concentrations (P<0.05)”

I posted the rhodiola study above.

I’ve personally only done the caffeine thing, except probably inadvertant use of Tylenol for pain management. The wife doesn’t like me taking acetaminophen for non-label uses, and, the First Endurance stuff is criminally expensive, and I’m afraid to buy any of the cheap bulk b-alanine, etc, marketed to bodybuilders for fear of what might be in there.
