Cooling fan for indoor workouts

I do most of my indoor cycling in my non-airconditioned garage and overheating is not a problem at this time of the year, but as it gets warmer it will get harder to provide adequate cooling. The usual household fans don’t do an adequate job. I’m considering getting a large drum fan as shown below:

Will it be enough or is it overkill??

It would not be overkill but it looks as if that particular model doesn’t look tilt to aim it up at your body/head. If that’s the case it wouldn’t be a very good option. I just did a quick calculation and find that it only generates a 12.75mpn air stream which would be like riding that speed cooling wise so not at all overpowering.

You might want a fan that you can tilt upwards, unless you sit that one on a stool or table in front of you. As for power, get as much as you can - you can always run it on low if high is too strong. If you get a mickey mouse fan and high is not strong enough, then you’re out of luck!

I bought one of these recently: http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-High-Velocity-Blower-Fan-655702/

It’s very quiet and puts out a concentrated blast of air that is perfect if you align it to hit you right in the chest when on the bike. If it doesn’t put out enough air for you, get another one. I can’t imagine anyone needing more airflow than two of these put out.

I use a fan like this one. This is the Home Depot model. I bought mine at Sams club. Really does a good job in my opinion. Worst case get 2 and angle the flow at you from front left & front right.

Mike,

Can you tell me the dimensions on the output port of that unit. I’m guessing ~ 12" X 6" and if that’s the case it only makes a 10mph breeze at 374 cfpm.

Hugh

You can’t really stick those industrial fans on a stool or table in my experience, they will blow themselves right off. Go for something with a tilt for sure.[

Something like this, http://www.target.com/p/Lasko-Max-Performance-20-High-Velocity-Floor-or-Wallmount-Fan/-/A-13992278#?lnk=sc_qi_detaillink works well.

I found something similar to it at Target in person for a lot cheaper too

Why not just ride outside?

This is the fan i use: It’s 6800CFM on max setting. It really moves around a lot of air.

One other thing to consider though, as it gets warmer, humidity will become a big problem in the garage. You might want to consider a dehumidifier.

Why not just ride outside?

Is that a serious question?

There are a lot of reasons.

Number 1 is safety. No cars, no angry motorists, no dogs, etc.

One can do a much more controlled workout. You don’t have to interrupt your intervals when there is a red light, stop sign, runner, pedestrian, or anything else that gets in the way.

For the price of the fans you are considering, you can buy 8-10 box fans at (insert massive big bog store). I use two that I bought at Target for $16 each.

You must be an awesome bike handler.

I personally like something like:
http://www.amazon.com/Air-King-18-Inch-Pivoting-9218/dp/B0007Q3RIE/ref=pd_sim_hg_2
It is about 3000CFM vs. 5000CFM for what you referenced. At least in my basement, 3000CFM
is more than enough (I usually use it on a low setting and sometimes get cold with it on even
when I’m going pretty hard). So I’m guessing the fan you pointed at is overkill.

I use one of these but not from walmart

In summary you are afraid to ride on the roads and want to do all your interval training on a trainer. Wow.

On another note, you could always…oh, I don’t know…open the garage!

Why do you care where he rides for his intervals?

It’s pretty common to do hard intervals on the trainer and other rides outside. Maybe he lives where it’s icy. Maybe he has small kids at home without childcare. Maybe he only has power info on his trainer. No matter what his reasons are, why do you have to be a dick about it?

I guess you have never heard people talk about how much they hate it when the weather gets to he point that they have to ride n the trainer or when the weather gets good and people are excited to get off the trainer. Then there is the part about how you do races on the roads, in the elements and trainers can’t prepare you or the wind shifting, for the heat of the sun, for changing road surfaces, for handling the bike, etc. Why do you think most pro’s in tri and cycling do most of their workouts outside.

Is going into the garage to kill yourself on the bike a good idea when you are home alone with small children? I have a 2 1/2 year old and would never do that. Too many bad things could happen.

Icy? He never mentioned anything about icy, so I doubt that is a reason. He also never mentioned anything about power info. In other words you are making assumptions in order to attack me.

I do wonder why you don’t rip on him for his asinine response to the person who suggested he ride outside or why you call me a dick for responding to him admitting he is afraid of riding outside.

Never mind, your mind is made up and I am sure any response I give will be the wrong one to you.

Speaking of wow. Can you guys open your minds and think outside your own little world for just a second and realize that not everyone has the same quality of roads available for cycling?

Even some pro’s advocate spending significant time on the trainer based on the quality of workout that it can offer. Sweeping generalizations blasting anyone who chooses to ride a trainer for intervals is shows you’re pretty out of touch with the world of cycling.
