Did anyone else see this on the 05 IMLP Hawaii qualifier list? Two guys same last name who finished (sub 10) together. I’m guessing brothers considering age group.
I imagine that one of them was getting on the other one to catch up so that they could finish together or perhaps it came down to a mano-y-mano sprint finish.
Dennis ‘Fat Boy’ Villavicencio
Allan “Scrawny Boy” Villavicencio,
These brothers engage in an ongoing long battle for the honor of claiming who is fitter – doctors or lawyers. The Villavicencio brothers, Dennis (an attorney from Carlsbad, CA, aka Fat Boy) and Alan (a physician from Boulder, CO, aka Scrawny Boy) have raced each other many times and always produce a close, exciting finish. At the 2002 Utah Ironman, they exchanged leads five times, discussed finishing together but instead sprinted to the finish where Scrawny Boy enjoyed a 10-second victory. Their difference in places (43rd and 44th overall) decided the final qualifying spot for the prestigious Hawaii Ironman. At the Big Sur Trail Marathon in October of 2003, Fat Boy left Scrawny Boy on the final hill to finish third overall. Both agree their race in Auburn could be decided on the Dam Wall – the 700 foot vertical climb to the finish in the final 1.7 miles of the run. Both brothers are committed first to their clients and patients respectively and enjoy triathlons and long-distance trail runs for fun and entertainment. Their healthy competitive attitudes make these passionate competitors ideal role models for all amateur athletes.
I saw them racing all day - they were never more than a few minutes apart - on the run the younger brother (Dennis) worked hard to catch his older brother (Alan) and then when they got to the finish they were going to run in together but the older brother took off b/c when he looked back he saw another athlete coming up on them. So, the younger brother only sprinted after the older brother took off - and he was a few steps behind across the line. I talked to them after the race - and Dennis was chiding Alan that they had plenty of time to come across together but Alan just took off thinking the guy behind them was coming up pretty quick. They are really nice guys.
I met one of them taking out cash from the ATM the morning after the race. Both were pumped about their kona slot. These two must be the fastest dudes in the >65 min swim club !
