I tried to search the boards to see if I could find anything relating to the subject. I am putting a commuter bike together to get to class and was wondering if there was any way of converting clamp-on to braze-on. The frame I wish to use, an older giant ocr-type, has a braze-on mount for the FD. I come to the experts for advice. Can it be done?
It can’t be done if your derailer is a true clamp on, however you can pick up a front derailer on e-bay for almost nothing.
Well, In your post you have said you want “clamp on” to become “braze on” then said the bike has “braze on” and you want “clamp on”. I’m assuming you want the former as the old giants didn’t have braze on. So in contrast to the first reply you can:

It begs the question, why not just put a cheap clamp on on though?
I see how that sounded confusing. I already have a spare clamp on and a frame that is braze on mount. I just wanted to save the little bit of money that I have converting it, but you are right I will most likely end up on ebay. Thanks for the links though
To answer your initial question, no, you can not convert a clamp on front derailleur into a braze-on. I wish, as it would have saved me many of times.
hypothetically: (and I cringe at even mentioning this) What about the possibility of actually turning the frame into a clamp on bike? Meaning, removing the braze-on mount? I dont know how the mount is actually attached to the bike, but with care, you maybe able to cut or grind it off?
That being said, I recommend just getting something off ebay. A new/ used derailleur is cheaper then a new frame ( if / when you mess it up).
