Continental aero 111 in TdF

Anyone with more info on this?

GCN also featured this tire in the newest “TdF tech”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrdtDr734N0.

Contrary to the bikeradar review I believe the tire is 25mm nominally wide - SwissSide Hadron2 wheels are 20mm internally wide and optimised for 25mm wide front tire.

I’ll be watching this closely - I have a $20 bet with Slowman that nobody with a 28mm or wider front tire will be on the Podium in Stage 7 or Stage 21 (the two Time Trials).

Because of the Olympics, the TDF is finishing the Tour with a TT in Nice. IMHO, the course is borderline insane for a TT, and could be a major player in the overall standings. Stage 21 Preview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TJ1X3bxCOA&t=68s

Oh, bike porn !!

JP Ballard talked about it a while ago in an Escape Collective podcast. He talked about the tire, but did not mention who the manufacturer was, which now is obvious as Continental. EC does an awesome job in case you hadn’t listened or looked at their page.

Risky because Pogacar has been riding 28s in TTs.

He is? I know he is using 28MM TT tires on his road bike, but the front of his actual Time Trial bike as well?

If he rides standard SES 7.8 (19mm internal width) in the front, then he’s clearly going for 25mm tire for the front. If he rides some wider new / prototype wheel from Enve, then he might put in 28mm. As for the market right now, I think Enve released new models with 25mm internal width but only up to 6.7, not deeper. So it makes sense he rides 28mm tires regularly in stages (safety wouldn’t allow you to go less than that), but he should have 25mm front in the TT provided Enve released something new for him.

oh snap. still, i’ll be 20 pesos hanginon is hanginon to his 20 bucks regardless of who rides what tire. (besides, that wager is news to me.)

also, pog may not make it onto any more podia. you never know.

I was just coming here to say I’m uncertain now. I’d read a poorly worded article that said Pogacar was using “28mm time trial tires,” but what it was actually referring to was his using 28mm GP5000TT tires on his road bike.

He’s used the Enve SES 6.7 as his front TT wheel all year so far. Which can take a 25mm tire.

So I don’t know.

You have any links or pictures showing that? UAE has been riding AeroCoach wheels on their TT bikes for a few years now (pretty easy to spot especially the super deep front wheel is not an Enve). I can’t remember anyone (at least not any of their key riders) using anything else the last few years. Here’s a picture from the TT on stage 7 of the Giro this year:

I believe they ride GP5000TT 25mm on those front wheels, though haven’t meticiulously checked. Pretty sure that Visma is on 28mm on their new super wide and super deep Reserve front wheel - with a 25mm inner width it’s likely designed around no less than a 28mm tyre.

That 100mm wheel UAE is on is ENVE…

Unless Enve got into the game of doing wheel replicas (including the signature valve cover on the AeroCoach front wheels and suddenly using external nipples on a TT wheel while using internal nipples on their road wheels), then no. I know Carl Spackler on here said it was an Enve, but never provided any actual proof. If you have some, I would love to see it.

Here’s a good picture of McNulty in the UAE TT this year where the valve cover and external nipples are a bit more clear:

Also, Enve has no wheels deeper than 71mm listed on the UCI wheels approval list, which it should be on if it’s a new wheel - and if it’s an old one, they’ve certainly been good at hiding it.

As a last thing, why would Enve remove all stickers from their wheels on their sponsored team? Makes zero sense - they have it plastered all over their prototype TT extensions, why not on their wheels?

The super deep front wheel he’s riding is an ENVE prototype.

Yeah, I take back my Enve SES 6.7 claim. I got that using press release text from UAE. But pictures tell a different story.

I have no idea if that’s AeroCoach or a prototype. I have to say I lean towards agreeing with MTM based on pictures.

The super deep front wheel he’s riding is an ENVE prototype.

Do you know when they first rode it in competition and when the public launch date is?

Also, do you know if they will ride it at the Tour, and if so what name it is registered under in the UCI equipment registration list for the Tour?

Along with the extensions, the 100mm front (and a new disc) are development projects ENVE has been working on with UAE for his assault on the double. I can’t find it, but saw a picture the other day of him cooling down on TT bike with the badged front.

McNulty rode it at nats and I’m pretty sure Pogacar rode it for both Giro stages. Public launch should be later this year.
