Concentrated Bottle for IM - favorite mix?

Been trying a few different concoctions of a concentrated bottle to carry for IM and I’m wondering if anyone has any favorites out there? I will say I haven’t tried Infinit yet, however I’m not really sure I wanna be spending that kind of cash anyways. Any suggestions? I’ve tried the watered down gels and this week I’m going to be trying a concentrated version of the Gu Roctane mix.

That kind of cash… really?

Let’s see - one bag of Infinit is 25 servings x 275 calories / serving = 6875 calories. Let’s assume you use 300 cal / hour in training / racing, that’s about 23 hours of training on a bag. A bag of preformulated Inifinit (Ride) is $38.50 at TriSports so that’s $1.69 / hour of training.

A gel is $1.10 for 100 calories (Powerbar pack of 24+). So gels cost you $3.30 / hour.

I use Infinit and I like it. I use it in training for rides 2 hours and longer and used it on an HIM for the bike where I had a concentrated bottle of 700 calories.

Woa didn’t know you could get them for that price. Guess I’ll have to try that out. I was going off their website and its like $35 (+$10 shipping) for 16 servings of the Go far stuff. Clearly I’m looking in the wrong place…

Use Sproscia for 15% off at trisports makes it even better!

Plain maltodextrine works for me
.

are you just adding that to a sports drink?

Yep, get the preformulated stuff… It’s good. The “make your own” stuff is nice but it costs $$$ and seriously I have no idea what ratios to choose, I’m not a sports nutritionist.

Although you might not be a nutrionist, any ideas of the difference between the infinit go far stuff ( http://www.infinitnutrition.us/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=343&idcategory=9 ) and say this Gu Roctane mix ( http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1137910_-1_400030__400030 ) ?

I can’t remember my exact mix but it was stolen from a pbm nutrition re.

I used 12 power bar gels, 2 scoops perform and topped it off with water, use one for a half, and two bottles for a full, drink every 15-20 min, and the rest just water to thirst

If you’re referring to maltodextrine, no, I mix it with water to a gel consistency, and add a little salt. I carry a bottle on the frame with the malto gel mix ~ 1500cal. I also carry a bottle between the arms for fluid. I alternate sports drink and water, and take a couple of gels too, to get electrolytes.

They are similar if you look at the amounts of carbs, sugar, potassium and sodium. The infinit stuff has some small amount of protein which can help.
As a rule of thumb you want about 1g of carbs / kg (body weight) / hour and 2 cal / pound / hour. Both are formulated so you can get close to that…

One thing to consider with concentrated bottles is to make sure you drink enough water to dilute that stuff otherwise you get into a shitty situation. I have my Infinit in the Profile Design aero drink (about 20oz) and I have a Speedfill on the frame. I take a sip of Infinit and 2-3 sips of water. It also depends if it’s hot or not, how much you sweat etc… If you drink too much you’ll have to pee, if you don’t drink enough you dehydrate or you won’t digest the concentrated nutrition (here’s where the shitty part comes).
So experiment with it in training and hopefully in the same weather / temperature conditions.

I’m working with the concentrates right now, trying to get the water to concentrate ratio down. I’ll be riding with the bontrager speed bottle on the dt (that has the concentrate), and then I have a torpedo bta and a single cage behind the saddle. Planning on carrying at least one with just water, and one possibly with perform/water mix (or what i grab at aid stations).

This year I used 7 cliff gels in my torhans Vr bottle and topped it off with water. Every sip I took of the concentration I also drank water from my aero bottle up front. I used the Mocha gel and they taste great!

Switched to Infinit this year. I was able to get 675 cals in a bottle (what I needed). Kind of sludgy but it tasted like very sweet lemon water ice. For me, the best tasting and easiest to digest nutrition I’ve tried yet. And it doesn’t go bad in the heat.

I use 6 scoops carbo pro + 2 large scoops perform (approx 800 cal) per bottle.

I’ve mixed many a 12-1500 calorie bottle of Gatorade for long training rides and IM races. Throw that on your downtube then just get water from the aid stations to fill your aero bottle to chase with and you only ever have two bottles on your bike at a time.

That’s PBN…ok?!?

The cocktail that cstoulil is referring to is the mix that 2010 IM Florida Champ, James Cunnama uses & is outlined here…

Ironman Florida Nutrition Report - 8:15:59 (1st Place O’all)

4 scoops First Endurance EFS drink with a 400 cal. liquid shot mixed in a 24oz bottle. Mix the orange drink with the vanilla liquid shot. 784 cal. bottle.

Read the label and you will see that most of what you are buying is just this anyway. Salt sticks or your favorite electrolyte supplement will be needed as well, but this allows you to decouple the electrolytes from the sugar. Also, the just plain malto and water runs through my GI tract faster than the other flavored options with much less chance of trouble. Just my 2 cents. YMMV. If you are mixing it into a speed bottle as a concentrate you can get A LOT of calories in that bottle this way.

Best I’ve used is High5 Neutral. You can load up he CHO and it doesn’t taste sweet…actually, it doesn’t taste like anything. Then you just add your own flavour but only if you want. I didn’t for years but then started adding a bit of lemon cordial. You could also use a scoop of your favourate flavoured CHO source.

Only think is that you need to use hot water to mix it concentrated enough to get enough CHO into 1 bottle for an IM bike if that what you are going for.
