Computrainer cadence magnet

Ok, I’ve been riding the CT in ERG only mode for years, but plan on using it soon with VeloReality, Racemate One and PerfPro.

Do I really need the cadence magnet, as I can’t find mine?

Would another magnet work instead as I have the cadence wiring setup?

Anyone use the “Puck”?

You can use any cadence magnet as long you have the computrainer wiring… regarding the “Puck” I don’t own that product.

Yes, any magnet from any of the cadence units will work. But, don’t use a super strong magnet as that will trip the reed valve too soon and throw off your spin cycle calculations. The magnet should just about have to touch the sensor.

The puck seemed too expensive to me.

You need a very specific version of the CT to use the puck and it’s not that common. Just buy “rare earth magnet” and slide them in the remaining space your pedal spindle. You can find them on amazon easily or at local craft stores.

No, what is it?
.

Do you have the wire that goes on the chain stay ?

I think it is limited to certain controllers. I have been trying to rig a contraption for the standard cadence sensor so I don’t have to keep it mounted on my bike. It is a pain to remove and remount when I take my bike off the CT (not overly frequent in the wintertime). No luck so far.

Do NOT get Rare Earth Magnets. They are too strong and will trip the cadence sensor early throwing out your spinscan angles. At least that’s what I was told by one of the CT guys at a booth they were at this summer. Just get a regular cadence magnet from your LBS.

I’ve never had any issues myself using them but I’m not the designer. To me I use the smallest 1/4" ones recessed in my spindle quite a bit. Was the booth guy a salesman or the designer by chance? I’m curious now if I’m getting accurate readings hhhmmmmmm

Don’t know what the guy did but he seemed pretty knowledgeble.

Thanks. I will just pick up a cadence magnet. I thought the racermate site said rare earth magnets?.

Philosophical Query… Do I need cadence if I don’t care about spin scan? I get an aPproximation via my ANT+ powertap to PerfPro and Veloreality. Is it necessary?

The Puck is a optical cadence sensor and requires version 35.65 or 41.62 handlebar controller. The handlebar controller can be upgraded from older models with a new chip.

I have the magnet, but it generally is hard to get set correctly.
I am trying to order the puck ($149)
Need to upgrade the handlebar controller as well ($100)
http://www.racermateinc.com/puck-optical-cadence-sensor-fra-form/

I filled out the form Tuesday to send in my controller for upgrade
No answer to the submitted form
No answer to emails
Phones go to voice mail, left message, no returned calls.

You would think they would be more anxious to take my $250.
I love my computrainer, but this has been my experience with the company.
Kind of feels like when you walk into a snobby road bike shop and everyone is too cool or disinterested to help you.

Hmmmmmm, “need”. Depends upon what you want to do. Cadence doesn’t require spinscan and as some of my workouts are cadence based I want it. I’ll do some workouts at higher cadences to get my leg speed up.

Spinscan on the other hand gives you stats for each leg, percentage of power by leg (which I wanted when rehabbing from an ACL repair), evenness of power application through the pedal cycle, at what position you are generating max power. If you aren’t interested in these things then don’t worry about them. But, I find them helpful.

Oh, and when setting up Cadence I start with the magnet just touching the sensor to make sure it I sneing picked up, then slowly rotate the sensor away to get a small gap, making sure that it is still picking up the magnet.

For that coin and headache, I’ll stick with the magnet cadence sensor. Good luck.

I know!
I was going to finish my rant by saying that then you lose interest and say f-it and walk out.
I am more likely to drop that kind of cash on something so non-essential on an impulse but if I have a week to think about it…maybe $ better spent elsewhere.

With PerfPRO you can use an ANT+ cadence sensor and scrap the wired CT cadence sensor/magnet. Though going this route eliminates the use of SpinScan.

The update for the puck requires returning the controller unit to Racermate versus receiving a chip to swap out.

I believe when it 1st came out you could get the chip. Yeah I am pretty sure because they had warnings about proper chip removal and replacement. NOW sending back the head controller is the headache.
