Compression shorts for open mary?

How many of you run your open marys or half marys in compression shorts? The reason i ask is because i rarely see anyone wearing them when im training or when im at races. I think they’re more comfortable than shorts and i know the compression has its advantages but why dont i see any runners wearing them?

I wore Sugoi compression trishorts for my last marathon in December as I had suffered bad quad pain in my previous few IMs, ultras and marathons before swithching to compressions shorts. I can’t honestly say if its the compression shorts that helped (training, nutrition, massage and pacing also played a part), but my quads held out fine this time (and for a subsequent ultra in Feb)

Probably because many people feel that the compression shorts are not as comfortable as loose run shorts. I for one change into loose run short in the IM because I hate running long distance in them and never would wear them in an open mary.

After wearing lined shorts for my first mary and getting serious inner-thigh rash I have worn tri-shorts/tri-suit for almost every running race since.

I hate regular short liners too. I quite like the 2-in-1 shorts with a baggy run short with a hidden compression inner, no problems doing a mary in these for me and less revealing than tri or compression shorts.

For about the last year or so I’ve done all of my run training in tri shorts because I don’t get any of the chaffing issues that I get in running shorts. I ran my last 1/2 marathon and marathon in tri shorts without any chaffing issues whatsoever.

Due to chaffing issues , i do all of my training / racing in compression shorts.

I use my baggy running shorts around the house.

I think that race ready makes some compression shorts with pockets on the back.
I have seen several people running marathons wearing them and in every case that person was a triathlete. Go figure.
we are addicted to spandex and sharpie.

My thoughts exactly, the compression shorts provide the coverage without anything rubbing. Im just wondering if the different companies(asics, 2xu) market these to runners at all or if us tri geeks are addicted to spandex like one poster said haha

I have gotten some cheap, lined running shorts and cut the liner out. I wear this “shell” over my compression shorts. It cuts down on the porn star look of compression shorts alone. This is not an issue at tri’s because most people do it, but running races seem a bit more conservative.

I prefer running in tri shorts / compression shorts in order to avoid the rash and chafing that others have commented on. Have done a couple of marathons in tri shorts; also found it nice to simply slide a couple of GUs up under the lower edge of the legs instead of having to carry a fuel belt.

Compression shorts with a pair of similar length lycras on top; the way to go.

The pornstar look , or similiar has never crossed my mind
I have no problem with who thinks what to be honest. Comfort is first priority for me.

I have had some exceptionally painful showers afterwards due to running with running shorts.

2XU recognizes the benefits of compression for every sport. Currently cycle teams such as HealthNet, Toyota United and Jelly Belly all use our compression tights, and the USA Rugby team (7’s) are wearing 2XU tights, and will also wear the shorts when they become available by the end of april.
The reduced fatigue is beneficial for anyone, and especially sports like running which can be so pounding.
So yes, we will be marketing more to runners as there is a huge benefit for long runs and races, but as a new company, with roots in triathlon, it makes sense as a natural launch pad.

Personally I train in 2XU run shorts. I have used compression shorts for the run in ironman. I like them becuase they do not cause any chafing which can easily happen in a wet pair of run shorts due to sweating or pouring water on myself. The compression shorts definitly helped reduce the muscle cramping caused by ironman racing, and i felt “better” at the end of the race.

Since I’m often on-call when running. I have to carry a pager and cell phone. I started using the DSS multipocket power trishorts and old power tribibs, since I can stick them in the pockets and they don’t bounce around. I now do all my long runs in them.

Chafing is no fun. If i’m going to run anything over a 10k I wear compression shorts.

chris… i’d love to try the compression shorts. i’m doing the flying pig mary in cinci the first sunday in may. where could i get a pair of these asap? thanks, dave

I have used compression & baggy running shorts,Try what works for you.I like the compression shorts now, they help keep legs a little warmer if it is windy or cool too.The compsression shorts are mainly used by the tri-crowd & alot of runners wont wear em.
Have you seen anyone wear a speedo in an open marathon???Some people like to run in those too…

I always run with under armour compression shorts under my addidas running shorts. No more chaffing.

gotcha, thats what i was thinking

I guess im not the only one wearing the shorts at races or during training, was starting to think i was there for a little while.
