Color travel powder-coating

Hi,
Anyone know any powder coaters who use ‘pigments’ which have the color travel effect (the color shifts from one color to another as you change the light source or direction you are looking at it)? There are several manufacturers who make the stuff such as Merck (Colorstream).

Might as well start by asking the experts.

I already did, and there was sort of a lack of knowledge as to the different things that go into their powdercoating process.

Another variant which gives really nice results that I was looking at is Chromaflair…I just cant seem to find any information about the connection to powdercoaters, and if it is a common additive, or a special thing, or just in paint or what. Google brings you just so far…

The entry barrier to becoming a powder coater is fairly low. So there are likely to be many fine even very good powdercoaters who don’t have a lot experience in what you’re looking for. Your best bet may be to speak with the manufacturer and ask for a recommended coater.

I think I know what you are talking about. I just had my new frame powdercoated, flat yellow. While at the painters shop, he talked to me about what sounded like what you are talking about. He gave me a sample (lawn mower cover) painted the same yellow that I wanted except with the added flecks or sparkles to compare. Looking at it inside his paint shop, it looked normal. However, once I took it out into the sun, it looked like a 1970s bowling ball! Almost blinding with twinkles and flashes. I did not like it all. Too sparkly, too flashy. Be careful, and remember to look at any samples in the direct sun. Small swatch samples may not be good enough. Try to look at a larger example in the direct sunlight. You might like it, I did not. I have seen that technique on some motorcycles too.

My understanding is that this is done with paint by spraying a base color then spraying another color over it that’s done with metal flakes that stand up so that from certain angles you are seeing through to the underlying base color.
I don’t think that can be replicated in powder coat because that’s something that gets melted on.

It seems t me the painter said that the process involved two different coating. One coating would change color after the second coating was applied, then baked on.
