Quick question. How many days were any of you back on your bike following a colonoscopy? thanks
Seriously? Is this a trick question? Answer: as soon as the anesthesia wears off. It’s colonoscopy, not a colostomy.
Just a colonoscopy? Next day. However, if they find something and remove it, then you need a few days. I had a polyp removed on a Thursday then rode 60 on Saturday. Apparently not the way to go as the cauterization broke loose and I started bleeding. Nothing too severe, but avoid it if you can
Colonoscopy: You can probably go out that evening as normal, but I wouldn’t get back in the saddle for a few days if polyps were removed, as GIO said.
Colostomy? 4 months after permanent ileostomy operation, I was doing my first time trial.
Wide Receiver or Tight End?
Sorry couldn’t resist, it is football season, heheh
In all seriousness, unless they do something other than in through the out door, you should be fine within a few hours.
I just had one done a few weeks ago. I was on the bike the next morning.
What about running? If they remove a Polyp can you go back to running the next day?
Check with your doc after the procedure. My rule: if it requires thought or coordination, save it for the day after the procedure. Despite feeling wide awake after the sedation, your coordination and reflexes won’t be the same for at least 12 hours depending on the sedation. There after, if :
No polyps = normal activity the following day.
Small polyp(s) = normal activity the following day, small risk for bleeding.
Large polyp(s) removed = hold the exercise, especially the endurance stuff and weight training for 5-10 days after the procedure and begin again slowly. There is a higher risk for bleeding.
Post-polypectomy bleeding is a risk up to 2 weeks after the procedure.
Good luck.
For now, the doc said everything is A-Hole-O.K.

Thanks, I’ll be able to comfortably go eat my lunch now without having to worry about ed’s pooper.
HA! i’m going tomorrow! just about to start drinking my co-lyte.
i never really thought about any downtime from physical activity afterwards.
what about if they biopsy the bowel wall (polyps aren’t the concern for me) - any downtime with that?
That may be even worse than on the bike.
Have you seen the musculature of a runner in slow-mo? That repetitive downward tug that you see in the muscles, imagine that on your internal organs. I wouldn’t do it.
Also, and this had happened to me when I was battling ulcerative colitis, the increased circulation of blood and increased blood pressure, basically the stresses of exercise on your body, can lead to “springing a leak” at the area where they removed a polyp—increased intestinal bleeding. Physical exertion can exacerbate any residual bleeding from the procedure. It’s a very scary situation.
If my life really depended on doing one or the other, I would do the bike. A colonoscopy is dealing with whatever is “farther in” and practically nothing to do with what you sit on when you are on a bike. DO NOTHING MORE THAN A COUPLE MILES!!! It would royally suck to have intestinal bleeding a bazillion miles from home and no one there to pick you off the road after collapsing from a hemhorage.
Sorry, I should have waited a few hours to reply.

No need to apologize, in retrospect it was my fault for clicking on the “Colonoscopy and Back In Saddle” thread before lunch.
I’m glad it all worked out in the end.
Thanks, that’s what I was thinking. I keep putting this off so I should probably go do it before the season starts.
