Colonic hydrotherapy!

A few guys I work out with are doing this! Anybody ever try it? They wont do long runs the day after, thats for sure!

They wont do long runs the day after

Yeah, but I bet they have the long runs.

So they pay good hard earned money to have a hose stuck up their butt? To remove toxins??? Perhaps the hydrostatic pushes toxins into their bodies. How much does one pay for this “privy-lege?”

I think GNC has a colon cleaning 5-day kit with different packets that you mix with water to drink, or something like that.

Besides the contraversial health benefits of cleansing the bowels, it’s also a common method used by boxers, etc. to make weight just before a fight.

i’m no anatomy expert, but my understanding is that the colon is the part of your body that stores your sh*t.

so you can clean it all you want, you can’t expect it to stay clean.

I’ve investigated doing some kind of cleansing to reduce waste. Apparently you are walking around with a lot of dead weight.

Some would say 10 lbs can account for 30 seconds faster per mile when running.

Would you rather spend $10 on a cleansing program to loose more weight than all the money in the world can reduce the weight of your bike?

I’ve done it once. It was an interesting experience but after two weeks of extreme can’t go/gotta go, i was willing to have a fire hose stuck up my butt.

I guess I felt better in the end, I think maintaining a healthy, fibrous diet keeps me feeling just as good.

The hype was probably started last weeks epsiode of the ultimate fighter. The laziest, fattest (22lbs. over class) fighter on BJ Penns team went in for a colonic. I guess it helped a little, he lost about 4 lbs.

People. This is NONSENSE.

Seriously.

If someone is going to the bathroom regularly (and by regularly I mean whatever is normal for them), he or she is not “carrying dead weight”. Your body usually does just fine all by itself. You don’t need to abuse enemas, prokinetics, osmotics or anything else. This is the kind of behavior we very often see in people with eating disorders…and in people who have listened to too many infomercials (yes, I have heard them too) talking about the “excess waste” you are carrying around.

Do I occasionally write a script (for a PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION) for some sort of serious issue, yeah. If you need colonoscopy, you need bowel prep. If you are an 80 year old lady, have been taking opiates for your hip replacement, and you’ve been constipated for a week because someone forgot to give you stool softeners, sure thing. Otherwise, forget about it.

Taking an agent that works by causing large osmotic fluid shifts in your bowel is not a benign thing. You can end up dehydrated, or with electrolyte abnormalities. How much do you think those sorts of things will slow you down? Or send you to the medical tent? Or the ICU? Then you have the things that work on an irritant basis. And there are others. Do you know how they work? I don’t, at least not all of them. These are ‘supplements’. There is no legal requirement that they even tell you exactly what is really in there.

Sorry for the rant. This kind of garbage seems to be making a comeback. In the past 2 years, I’ve seen three patients with a major, life threatening health issue as the result of taking these types of products (as directed, by the way. They FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS).

Talk to your physicians if your have questions. Not the person at the supplement store. Not some yahoo witchdoctor who is trying to sell you ridiculous products at ludicrous prices.

Just train. And train. And train. And sleep. And eat right. And train. Your body will do what it needs to.

Philbert

word.

I use Kashi GoLean cereal. If that stuff won’t clean you out, nothing will.

Hogwash. How much of that ten pounds is water that your are losing? How much are you going to be dehydrated? It that the smartest thing to do before a race is to purposely dehydrate yourself? Would it not be better to get into shape and lose 10 pounds of fat instead? And you can do that by doing MORE is MORE.

I guess I felt better in the end

Not a safe medical practice. Just eat good fiber in diet, keep hydrated. It’s a racket that “sounds” like it make some sense but the science isn’t there…there are more risks than benefits. Save your money. Crash weight loss in an endurance athlete is a disasterous method of getting faster.

to paraphrase the neanderthal looking guy from UFC 5, “You should spend more time training, and less time getting a tube shoved up your butt.”

I wil testify as to the accuracy of that statement! I am quite certain Kashi translates into ex-lax. Good stuff, but man will it keep you regular.

I have two colons. When my colon is dirty I remove it and store it in a jar of Simple Green. I then take the colon that’s been sitting in Simple Green and install it. I rotate colons about every 3 weeks, more often if it rains.

Of course, some people here will tell you not to store you colon in Simple Green. “It’ll break, it’s not made for that, blah blah blah.” I’ve never had any problems, YMMV.

Park sells one of those brush kits that you can run through your colon, but I find them to be too abrasive.
