Cold Lake Michigan

This morning in Milwaukee during a triathlon, many athletes are suffering from hipothermia due to the cold lake Michigan waters. This July has been the coldest on record.

What, did the critters from the zoo break out into Lake Michigan?

Sounds like Team in Training was at the race.

Where in Milwaukee can you swim on Lake Michigan? Is there even a beach there?

any overall results up yet for that race?

Not yet, but here is a link http://www.onlineraceresults.com/event/view_event.php?event_id=3888

.

The beach is between the Igloo’s and the snowmobile shop.

It had nothing to do with the tempeture of the month of july - the lake turned yesterday…

When the wind shifted directions yesterday and picked up in MKE, it blew all the surface water towards michigan and brought all the cold bottom water to the top.

Happens all the time.

A couple of years ago there was a triathlon in northern IL where on Saturday the water was 66, and on sunday it was like 47…

I swim at Ohio St. in the city 4-5x a week, water has been anywhere from 63 to 68 & up for the past month or so.
Few Saturdays ago I swam in the lake & water was 68, did the Harbor Lights Tri up in Waukegan on Sunday, the water was 57.
Funny how a few short miles can make a world of difference. There were so many people who were used to city water & didn’t bring a wetsuit. Ouch.

Ok here comes a thread hijack! So how was this Frank Dobbs Tri, was it as shitty as all his others?? This guy screws up race after race and people just keep paying him…

I was camping on the Michigan coast and was amazed how hot the water was, mid 70’s at least. Then the wind changed and I had these strange two lumps in my throat…freezing.

Lake Michigan Tri 2002 – Water temp was 70 on Sat, 54 on Sunday.

At Steelhead yesterday 69F today in Lake Bluff - opposite side 56F…

One of my brand new clients did the race in WI and he does not have a wetsuit yet-- but still first out of the water in his wave - felt no pain on the bike as parts of his anatomy had moved!!!

Didn’t race - but watched. Everything seemed to be OK.

I was looking at some of the times and they seemed----screwy? What were the distances? Top swim times for the sprint were in the high teens to low twenties and 5K/10K times were pretty high as well. Guys in the top 20 of the sprint were 25-30+minutes. Am I missing something?

looking at a couple of people, it looks like the swim may have been a little short - the cold could have also affected people.

Cold water can really screw you up if you don’t get your body adjusted to it before hand…
