I decided to start using the saucony mirage, from kinvara’s, as my trainer thinking the extra cushion would help with the PF flare up I was going through. Well now after a couple weeks in the mirage, I have the PF under control but my IT band is irritated. I have only ran minimal miles, like 15 per week the last couple weeks so I’m pretty sure it’s not that. I feel like the mirage don’t allow me to finish pronating when I run in them. I feel like I am running on the outsides of my feet, if that makes any sense.
Should I go back to the kinvara’s or stay with the mirage? I am planning to see PT for treatment and therapy but wanted a little input from the ST crowd as maybe someone else has experienced the same thing. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.
on what planet is the mirage supportive?
I didn’t think they were supportive. That’s why I tried the mirage, I was under the assumption that they were not supportive but may provide just a little more cushion in the heel. I know the little saying about assumptions too so maybe I was wrong
It could be overstriding in the new, softer shoes. This was definitely an element causing my ITB issues over a year ago. Try focusing on your cadence, 90 steps per foot / 180 steps per minute, and focus on taking smaller steps. Doing this helped me immensely. I’m also a pronator.
Just FYI, the Kinvara’s definitely beat the crap out of me. Mine are a bit worn out, but I ran a 15K in them on Saturday, and here on Tuesday I’m STILL sore. I’d probably be struggling with ITB stuff if I ran in them every day.
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same thing but when I checked my cadence my last couple runs, I was always a bit over 90, like normal. Now the big question, how did the 15K run go? Worth the prolonged soreness?
It falls under the “support” category as it does have a supporive arc on the medial midfoot.

15K went well, for me anyway (a somewhat mediocre runner). Planned 6:45 pace; Executed 6:41 pace according to my Garmin. 1:03ish on a hilly, 9.5mile course. Now that these Kinvaras are thoroughly worn out, I think I’ll grab (another) new pair of Newtons. A good training session, but definitely not worth 3+ days of “post-marathon” legs.
Sounds like a good race to me. I have a 15K next month and plan to be about where you were, though that is a little more than a training effort for me and I live in nice flat Florida Hopefully I can miss out on the extended post race soreness and get rid of some of my end of the season aches and pains.
