Cog swap

I have a DA 7800 12-25 cassette. Can I replace that 12 cog with an ultegra 6700 11 cog? Just using the 11 or 12 for the downhill sections of a race. Would likely use one or the other but not both.

Thanks for the help!

I am pretty sure you have to change the entire cassette. You would have to get an 11-25 and put that on. Most people will probably say you don’t need an 11 tooth. Just remember if you switch to an 11-25 then you are going to lose a gear in the middle that you will most likely need more often than the 11. Also, proper pacing strategy does not include hitting the fast downhills hard.

I saw that once, it looked nasty.

I did the opposite on a 9sp dura-ace (swapped 11 with a 12) no problems. With the 9sp, it required a different lock ring for the 12 and 11 which might also be the case with the 10 speed. Other that the lock ring, there’s no reason what you want to do won’t work.

and everyone who says that obviously doesn’t live anywhere with any real hills!!! I wishIhad an 11 on my cassette probably 3-4 times a week.

I live near plenty of hills, you must not have read my post very well. I use an 11 regularly but in a race I won’t because I would rather have a gear in the middle that I am more likely to use. Having an 11 in a race isn’t beneficial because you should not be working that hard at those high of speeds anyways.

Does a 16/17/18 cog give you more speed? Is your pedal cadence so finicky that you can’t pedal 92 or 88 RPM for a few miles?

I use an 11 on race day and I pass more people on the downhill than anywhere on the course…I can pedal along at 35MPH
right at my target power/HR and cruise past people coasting / spinning out with smaller gearing. We are racing right? Passing
is a good thing…
