I recently replaced my chain and cogset. Because I wanted to ride that day (and heck they’re training wheels), I settled for Shimano 105 when what I really wanted was Ultegra. Had a great ride, new chain and cogset were fine but a little voice keeps reminding me ‘shoulda got the Ultegra’ Now I’m seriously considering replacing the 105 with Ultegra. Am I nuts?
Am I nuts? No.
Should you get an Ultegra? No
Would it be a waste of money to change (especially for training)? Yes
Nuts?!?! I don’t think so, I obsess about the same type of stuff.
I have two bikes, one with full Dura-Ace and another with full 105. I know the DA is way lighter but really I don’t feel or experience any difference when riding.
Their training wheels…think of the extra weight as a slight advantage for you come race day.
Good luck,
Travis
Got my dream bike with Campy Record last year. Truth is it didn’t shift any better than my 105 equiped bike with 6000 miles (two chains replaced). 105 is solid stuff.

IMHO, yes. They’re training wheels fer crissakes…
Consider the source (I’m still running old 8-speed Ultegra…
Yes, I think you’re nuts. For disposable parts like that (chains, cogs, chainrings to a lesser extent), I couldn’t give a rip about the name on the group – if it performs, I go with it.

Well…actually, if you change the chain often enough, cogs and rings aren’t necessarily “disposable”. I’ve got a 4+ year old cogset that sees heavy use that interchanges easily with brand new chains. Then again, I replace my chain every 6 months, whether it needs it or not
I can see the bump up to Ultegra from 105, it’s a bit lighter, lasts longer and seems to me at least to shift juuuust a touch better, plus it isn’t much of a price difference when you look at the life of the part. Ultegra to 10spd DA, now that’s a different story, even many of the pro teams race on ultegra cassettes…
Am i nuts? I suspected as much. Will I upgrade? nah. I like the heavier wheel for training angle.
Thanks for the feedback.
