Coffee for a USA visiter

Well I will be visiting your shores in 4 weeks time; it will be my first ever visit to the USA. My first stop will be Chicago, in the city, Golden Mile, north Michigan ave. Second stop will be NYC midtown Manhattan.

My question is really a survival coffee question. I will find it very difficult to survive for 2 weeks without my Italian espresso coffee; this is what it looks like. I don’t do starbucks coffee or anything like that (please do not take offence to this). Does anyone here know any Italian coffee shops that make a flat white or espresso? My last resort is to buy a coffee machine online in Chicago and take it to NY then leave it there. Your help would be greatly appreciated, there must be some Italian blooded Triathlete here on the forum who can assist me.

HTFU!
o.k., that’s out of the way.
The U.S. has caught on and you will find espresso in plenty of places (yes, even 'bucks does it). It won’t be “Italian”. If you’re posting shots like those, then you’ll probably notice different water and many other variables.

I’m living in Portugal, so I sympathize a littlle. For me, it is mostly the price difference. 55 cents a shot here. It is not a coffee desert in the States, especially not in Chitown or NYC… No need for on-line searches.

Worst case scenario, consider it a part of the culture shock.

Btw. If you do buy a machine and want to resell in NY, PM me.

Enjoy your trip!

Wow, thank you, I will HTFU, I know I must be one of the few who has not visited USA but I have been to Portugal and Spain, loved it. As for the cycle tour, I am checking the site as I type. Do you do Italy cycle tours as well?

NYC here, I struggle. The problem is not so much that there weren’t really great places but that there is none close enough to where I live. And that is Midtown.
Maybe I have been missing something and someone can help? And no, a home machine is never an option.
If you are in LittleItaly/Nolita, you’ll find good Italian coffee.
In Midtown, please give Zibetto a shot and report back to me.

If you do decide to buy a coffee machine and your in NYC ,you should stop by Porto Rico importing company on Bleeker street.
Here’s the website. http://www.portorico.com/store/
They import coffee from all over the world,so you should be able to find what your looking for.

.

if you already know where you’re staying go to google maps, put in the zip where you’re room is then a comma then try coffee, then maybe espresso, and a map should come up with any businesses under those listings. i.e. 76227, coffee or 76227, espresso. sometimes the map will be small in the right, upper corner of your browser, below it will be a link to click to enlarge it, it makes getting the big pic of where you are and the listings are. lots 'o luck.

off to grind some beans and steep a coffee in my french press.

That’s funny. I lived in France and (traveled through Western Europe) for six years and found it was terribly difficult to get good coffee.

Hello, my name is Dave and I am also a coffee addict. I can understand your needs and the fact that Starbucks just does not cut it. Fortunately you are in luck in that Chicago might be home to the best espresso in the US. Intelligentsia Coffee (http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com) is based in Chicago and serves world class espresso at several locations. You can also visit their roasting facility for tours if you really want to geek out (yes, I have done the tour). They also have a shop in New York, by the way. If that does not satisfy you, then the website http://coffeegeek.com/ has a forum that will list several excellent choices for espresso in both cities. Let me know if you have any other questions, the only thing I like more than Triathlon is coffee!
Dave.

This place is pretty good. Not midtown, but certainly worth a visit.

Same problem
Can’t find good fried chicken and corn bread over on your side of the world.

Indeed.

Gimme and Intelligentsia are two of the finest shops around.

I thank all of you for helping out, this means so much to me; I am a home barista and often entertain at home with a local roaster who supplies my beans. Greatly appreciated and I am sorry about the corn and chicken, it looks like I will have to try that in America. It sure will be a culture shock for me and I have no doubt that I will love it. (Especially now that I will be able to drink coffee).
Forums are great for information like this.

Thank you I am looking forwards to it.
Most importantly I will now be able to start my day with coffee.

Weedris, Thank you from my coffee heart. This web page is what I am looking for.
