Coffee Cup for Commuting

I just moved and now live 5.5 miles from my office instead of 45 miles away. This is very exciting. Sometimes I want to take the scenic route and make it a training ride, but sometimes it’s nice to just hop on the commuter bike and cruise to work.

Some mornings it would be great to bring a cup of coffee with me and I’m wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a leak-proof mug that fits into a standard bottle cage.

I am aware that this is a fantastic problem to have.

Just put it in a insulated bottle but leave the cap open so that the steam has somewhere to go.

I think trek made one that fits inside of a bottle cage. It was labeled Juan Pelota, a friend of mine got it at the Austin shop. It was actually really nice, I stole it a few times.

bump just because I am curious, I am looking for something as well.

Fits in my bottle cage and doesn’t leak. And survived a trip down the road

Awesome. That’s exactly the type I’m looking for. I was nervous about buying something online without knowing if it will fit.

Thanks!

The blue paint will peal off if you put it through the dishwasher, I just wash mine by hand. Had it a couple years and it looks fine and still leak proof. And will keep coffee hot for a couple hours

This guy has done some research for you:

I have an 18 ounce Thermos (Thermos branded) that is awesome. It fits perfectly in my cages. Bonus, it has a little cup.

Seems like drinking out of the little cup while riding could be quite dangerous for someone with the bike handling skills of a triathlete. Good think I’m more like this guy:

The photo’s a bit dated. I would be reading my iPad.

Not directly answering your question, but, if it’s a dedicated commuter, why not just get one of these and use the travel mug you already have?

bar non the best thermos I have ever used is the hydro flask. they post dimensions online, and you can buy on amazon. You can beat the crap out of them and they will last forever. you can even buy different lids for them. I had two, but lost them both unfortunately. I’ll definitely be buying more hydro flasks when I get a chance. good for cold and hot . I just use this one right now, much better graphics :). The rubber band is a must as the metal tends to make quite a bit of noise while riding.

not PROI don’t have a travel mug with a locking lid that prevents splashesI don’t want to violate rule #52, as my commute is less than 2 hours: http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#52
Yes, aesthetics are important, even on a commuter.

I have one and it works like a champ.

Looks great. If only I could afford one of their frames!

Not a cup, but a wy to carry it…
Since triathletes seem to not have any problem hanging hydration from their handlebars, I give you theSoma Morning Rush cup holder…

OH YEAH! Starbucks has a stainless steel or black or dark grey mug. It’s tall, slim and you can shake the shit out of it and it doesn’t leak one bit. Fits perfect too! You have to get the one without the handle though, or maybe you don’t but I didn’t try it out. Crappy thing is… it’s $20. It’s my favorite mug! There is a rubber strip right at the perfect height where your cage should latch on if you choose to keep the band on there. And it’s locked on solid, you could hit a curb and that thing is staying in there, but hopefully you don’t do that. It’s about 8 inches tall.

Topeak makes a bottle cage with a rubber strap that’s designed to fit a large Stainless steel Starbucks cup
