Coconut Water (1)

Anybody experiment with this? thinking about giving it a whirl but wanted to get some opinions about it.

i tried it in natural flavor and just about threw up. tasted like watered down spoiled milk. ive heard good things about it, just might need to get flavored or a different brand.

I tried it a few weeks ago for the first time. Supposed to be really good for you. Taste is ok…I’ll get used to it.

I also tried it and could not even drink it. I am willing to eat or drink almost anything and this was not good. I am guessing it was also unflavored.

Having spent many years in the Caribbean, I’ve downed quite a few coconuts. It is known as a laxative, which I found to be true. I would not drink if training.

Accidentally got a cup of it while running the LA Marathon. Nasty taste, especially when working…

Guess I seem to be in the minority, I love it, great stuff.

You can also get it sweetened up with Mango, Pineapple and a few other flavors.

there is a great podcast on this topic on either endurance planet i believe
.

Vitacoco with pineapple is the best. I love it…Steer clear of Zico. It is from concentrate and “naturally flavored”. Terrble. Be sure you get the good stuff, not the concentrated reconstituted nastiness

an acquired taste, raised and born here in SE Asia, taste is sweet and better than water - long rides we gulp these down at every stop - for hydration purposes and price for one coconut is around $0.20 - freshly picked from the tree.
did try VCO - virgin coco oil but made me even perspire more

x2 but Mexican Caribbean. I have a palapero (or son, if they’re around) open one up for me. They’re The Best - especially iced! But you have to drink them fresh. and the meat is laxative.

I love it as a post workout drink or just something for general hydration. Also, be careful to distinguish between coconut water and coconut milk, very different.

im shocked to hear any hate on the taste of coconut water. maybe what you guys got wasnt fresh… i love the stuff. perfect for after workout hydration without the refined stuff that many ‘sports drinks’ have. after a hot day of training…oh man cold coconut water is so great! great source of potassium too. a lot more than bananas.

if you do the natural flavor coconut water, i find that adding a splash of orange juice makes it perfect. also don’t forget to add a little salt. LAVA did an article about how coconut water isn’t good for triathletes unless you add a little sodium. great potassium though, and no cramping ( for me at least ).

or you can do the flavored coconut waters, the zico mango coconut water is good, but a little sweet if you are eating gels / shot blocks during the ride.

other natural energy drinks that are good are green or black tea w/ honey added, w/ shot blocks w/ electrolytes for nutrition.

It has to be cold, or it’s not so great. I’ve tried it a few times after races when they were giving it away. For free (when cold), I’d drink it.

Zico coconut water was a giveaway at the gym where I work; expensive and terrible-tasting stuff.

It should sell well in the triathlon community

Drink it for the electrolytes. Awesome after a hangover too.

Zico bottles are from concentrate…BOOO
Zico cartons are natural. Yay, but still tastes like eh.
Naked is owned by Coke…BOO
Harvest Bay is owned by Hershey…tastes ok…small Boo

O.N.E is the best tasting coconut water. YAY
Vita Coco isn’t so bad either. YAY

Unflavored is best, flavoring adds sugars (good if you need it) and reduces electrolytes.

I recommend coconut water to all my athletes. Can be an acquired taste.

Coconut water IS NOT coconut milk or coconut oil. Know the DIFF.

Coconut water is not a laxative or thick.

Drink it and live well!

The spousal unit tried it, liked it, and talked me into giving it a try. Not my favorite flavor in the world, but if you get it good and cold it’s not awful. And I’m a convert in terms of electrolyte replacement- I’m prone to summer exercise-induced migraines because I sweat out what seems to be most of the natural salts in my body during humisery season. And so far, the times I’ve used it as a recovery drink, I’ve had zero headache problems afterwards, in part because the coconut water’s high potassium and magnesium levels. (The lack of sodium in the drink doesn’t bother me because I can more than make it up in the rest of what I eat & drink every day.)

PS. Just found Blue Monkey at Whole Foods.

AMAZING. yum

They had it on a supported ride I did today. Disgusting.
