Hi Everyone,
I’m a west coaster and trying to figure out my flights to IMMT this August. It’s seeming to be cheaper to fly into the US and drive across the border. But I’m also unfamiliar with the area, so if anyone has suggestions on where to fly to for this Ironman, I’d love the advice.
Like the other poster said, it’s probably Burlington, but I find it hard to believe that it’s cheaper to fly into Burlington than Mtl - it’s pretty pricey to fly there usually. Others you could look at are Manchester (add 2 hrs to your Burlington time) or Plattsburgh (across the lake from Burlington).
We used to take an annual ski trip to Tremblant (highly recommended!). We did both the Burlington and the Montreal routes and flying into Montreal is by far the easier trip. It would take a huge price difference to make it worth flying through Burlington, IMO. Plus Montreal is one of the great cities in North America. It’s really a special place and you would be very short sighted if you didn’t figure out a way to spend a little bit of time there during your trip.
You could also fly Porter airlines from Toronto (or Newark) directly to Tremblant’s airport (about 30 mins from the site, accessed via shuttle). May increase your costs, but then you have no rental car to pay for. If you are staying on site, you won’t need a car for just the IM piece, though you may want one for touring, etc.
I did not know that Tremblant’s airport is open in the summer or I would have mentioned this option as well. Flying directly into Tremblant is funny. The airport is this little tiny place with one (or two??) big log building–it’s straight out of the tv show Northern Exposure. I’ve flown into there twice for ski trips and one time I just started laughing because there were MORE TSA AGENTS than passengers!! That said, don’t let the small size scare you off–it’s a good option if you can make it work $ wise.
For us, it was always so brutal getting to Tremblant for ski trips because we had 2 little guys and in the winter you were guaranteed a weather delay of some type. The coup de grace was the time we spent 2 1/2 days (right before Christmas) snow bound at the Newark Airport Marriott. Kids loved it–we swam in the pool every day and they ate the same meal (pancakes and sausage), every meal, for 2 1/2 straight days–but Mrs. Combs & I almost went insane. I envy you your summer travel to Tremblant which will hopefully be worry free.
One thing I promise you–you will be blown away with how pretty Tremblant is. Gorgeous place. And the service and staff at Tremblant are so nice it’s almost ridiculous. Think 5 star hotel with no attitude.
Anyone ever flown in Ottawa and driven to IMMT from there? We are thinking of doing that because we are going to my wife’s family camp on the St lawerence after the race and wanted to be able to fly in and out of the same city. We are coming from DC.
I was playing around with looking for flights to the race this Summer and it looks as if Porter doesn’t fly to MT in August. I could be wrong, but I couldn’t find anything.
You could also try flying into Ogdensburg. It’s right on the border and it’s only 3 hours to Tremblant from there. It also takes you through Ottawa which is pretty nice in around parliament…

Yes. Kinda. My wife flew in to Ottawa and then drove to Tremblant to watch my race.
We live in Ottawa so we know the route. It’s oretty good and 2 hours flat.

+1. Super easy from Ottawa. Almost straight up. Almost boring… then beautifully easy.
Definitely the way to go if you want to land in Ottawa.
