Closest lap pool in Waikiki, Honolulu?

Looking for a place to swim where I am not part of the food chain.
Thanks!

-YMCA (25m) next to Ala Moana on Atkinson.
-Palolo Valley Pool (50m). Take Waialae to Palolo Valley ave
-Kaplono Park (25m). Take Kapahulu ave turn right up the hill at jack in a box. Pool and tennis courts are about 1 mile up.

Try Ala Moana park, where the Honolulu Tri swim is. Really no danger and pole to pole is about 1000m.

Keau-Thanks!

i know you asked for swim, but the Nike Town weekly run is pretty good. not sure what day, maybe wednesday. i ran it when i travelled there on business.

Not sure if nike town is still open, they were supposed to be closing

I’m in Chicago and its still snowing. If your in “can’t say it” find your own swimming hole. lol

So you flew 1000s of miles to swim in a pool? =)

Kaimana Beach… 400 meters round trip to the windsock… walking distance from Waikiki hotels… lifeguards, plenty of swimmers, and fish too.

Or Ala Moana, or Grey’s, or Queens, or really… anywhere minus Sandy’s and Makapuu. If you’re at the Hilton, you could swim in a nice gentle channel where the Waikiki Rough Water swim ends. Same place the canoe Molokai channel crossings end too.

Or… really… i guess… i’ve seen it done… you could swim in the Hilton Lagoon.

The world is your oyster. Abandon the lane line!

Really? Is the situation so bad now? I’ve heard there are a lot less entrants into the Honolulu Marathon, too? And when I was there last december they said hotel occupation rate was down to about 67 percent … maybe they should think about their rates?

Your in Hawaii, swim in the ocean. You won’t be a part of the “food chain.” Those of us that live here swim in the ocean every week. Go to Kaimana beach down by Diamond Head and swim out to the wind sock and back (250m) , or Ala Moana beach park - there you can swim on the inside of the reef and the most dangerous this is the stand up paddle boards.

Yep I havnt been to Waikiki in a while, but maybe about a month ago there were reports on the news of nike town closing. Tourism down, means less money and stores and restaurants closing.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but did anyone see the media trying to start a feud between swimmers and paddle boarders? I swim at ala moana all the time and have never had a problem with them. Sure there can be a lot of paddle boarders out in the water but they stay out of the way. I have never been hit by them, but I sure have been hit by swimmers not spotting when Im heading into the sun.

I have to admit I haven’t been to Ala Moana for a few months. But last time I was there I remember there being A LOT of paddleboarders. Never ran into one or was hit by one, but certainly felt like I had to watch them carefully. And I only think it’s gotten worse. There probably needs to be a designated put in/out area and they need to stay a certain distance from shore, e.g., past the 500m markers.

I would still rather dodge paddle boards at Ala Moana then share a lane at the Manoa pool…

Dumb question, but where do you guys leave stuff like car keys, towel, clothes etc. at Ala Moana? Is there a place they won’t walk off while you’re in the water?

I leave my slippers, towel, and car key under the lifeguard stand at the Diamond Head end. Never had a problem. You’ll see other swimmers leaving their stuff, too.

Some folks I know pin their car key to their suit.

Wallet, clothes, etc. stay in the car.

On Niketown, interesting note but the store closing has little to do with the economy. Based on various sources, friend’s who work at Nike in Hawaii as well as corporate, plus my interaction with the sports industry in Hawaii as a sports magazine editor came up with…

-#2 store in the country based on sales, so closing is non-performance based
-main reason is that the clientel is mainly non-local and mission of the store is more to provide a positive face for the company in Hawaii, thus if the locals don’t go there it’s positive impact in it’s current location is pretty low. They are hoping for a better location with the next rendition, ie not waikiki
-two building tenants are gone, only Niketown left, building up for sale meaning possible new lease coming up if it sells… perfect time to bail
-nike is supposedly pulling resources from american market for pushes in europe and japan
-very likely we’ll get a niketown outlet or concept store opening up here in a bit less touristy location

No problem!!! In return can I get a deal on those Xentis STI bars?? hahaha!!!

Have fun in Oahu, Keau

If I lived in Honolulu, I would swim at Ala Moana just about every day and never get in a pool again. You can’t ask for much better of a spot.

Tai,

You have far more expertise in the field than I, so I really don’t want to doubt you… but… regarding your first rationale:

You’re telling me that NIKE, a huge company that cares about one thing (cha-ching) as the bottom line would give up its SECOND BEST store in the US so that kama’aina here can feel a little more connected?

Pulling out of Waikiki… cutting all those jobs… giving tourists one less reason to come… probably ending the great 2x/week free runs… this is how they put on a positive face?

Where will they move? Ward Center? Ala Moana? Is that any different? And they’d make less money.

They should build an nike outlet at the new mall out in kapolei. As for towels and footwear at the beach I usually leave it in the car. My keys I usually keep it the pocket of my surf shorts or tie them to the waist of my jammers.
