Click, Click, Click - stupid annoying noise! (Problem Solved! I hope)

So when I’m riding I hear a click, click, click, that is in rhythm with my pedaling (standing or in saddle), and when I coast the noise stops. I took it into the LBS a couple times and this weekend the took off the bottom bracket, tightened the pedals, and greased the rear quick release. This morning I had the bike up on the trainer and once again, click, click, click - I really paid attention to it this time (harder to do when out on the road and this was the first time I have been on my new trainer) and the noise seems to be coming from the front chainring.

Any suggestions or ideas on what it could be? I was thinking the chain might be hitting something but like I said, it’s only when I’m pedaling so it’s hard to really see what it could be.

The bike is a '07 Trek Madone 5.0.

Hey RocketShoes When I first got my bike ( Argon 18 Mercury ) I heard it too. Didn’t know what it was, similar to you. Check the cable going to your front derailleur. It may be hitting your crank shaft with every peddle stroke. I just bent the end in towards the frame…Problem solved…Hopefully yours is a simple solution like mine.

I heard a click click click the other day as I started out on my ride. Two miles later I stood up to climb the remaining part of a short but steep hill and SNAP! The chain stay cracked, my wheel locked, and now my frame is on the way back to the company and I am at the mercy of the warranty dept., who will tell me if it was my fault or theirs.

I had that on the road bike I raced with a long time ago, turned out to be a crack in the pedal spindle that would shift slightly under pressure.

A few easy things to check.

  1. Grease and tighten chainring bolts

  2. Tighten your crankarms

  3. Grease and tighten your pedals.

Had one too. Loose spokes.

I had that happen and it turned out to be a shim (that’s supposed to be adhered) that was coming apart from the inside of the seat tube. Depending on what kind of pressure I was putting on the seat (and thus the seat post), it’d click or not click. Drove me nuts trying to figure it out… My LBS spent a day and stripped the entire frame down and couldn’t find it. Ended up calling the manufacturer who said it was a defect and replaced the frame. Good luck!

For me it was cranks ever so slightly out of true causing the chain to contact the front derailer that was ever so slightly bent outwards at the back. Try isolating exactly where in the crank stroke it ticks, then hop off and inspect everything for contact.

Then try adjusting your derailer position by just barely pressing on the shifter slowly in tiny amounts.

Good luck! Report back what it turns out to be!

had a click like that once, came from the shoe cleat, a spring piece in the speedplay system. Tightening the attachments solved it for me.

Also if you have FSA cranks they tend to loosen on the noncrank side.

I had that one time and it was a loose cassette and a few cogs were clicking. I knew because only a few gears would produce the sound. Doubt its it but might be

Here is one to check as well…

My soon to be exspouse’s shoes have a couple of loose parts in the sole. nothing wrong with the shoes other than this, but it sure was annoying as all hell to ride next to her.

So, try shaking your shoe to see if they rattle. Hers are sidis.

I had the same problem, but as it turned out it was something simple. Is it only when you ride your trainer? I use a CycleOps Fluid 2 trainer, and if I have the roller too tight it makes the noise. If I loosen it up a bit the noise goes away. Hopefully that is all you need to do.

I’m having similar problems with my new felt s22. I thought it might be the chain skipping or something, since it stops when I stop pedaling.

I notice it on both the road and the trainer. I do have the CycleOps Fluid 2 which I used today for the first time. How do you know how tight to have it? I played around with it last night and couldn’t seem to get it “perfect” - of course that drove me crazy and I have been obsessing over it since then.

this exact thing happened to me on Saturday.

I had just come out of a big climb, and I got a ‘click, click, click’ in time with my pedaling. I was close to my LBS, so I stopped by to have it looked at.

turns out my braze-on front DER had gotten a little loose, and had dropped down into the path of the chain ring (big ring).

Anyway, every stroke one or two teeth would graze the DER. Easy fix, no harm done. Just had to tighten and reset the front DER.

I hope it’s an easy one like that for you…

First I would say that if your bike is making the noise on the road as well, its not the trainer.

As far as how tight to set the trainer; if I remember correctly, you should tighten the yellow handle until the tire is touching the roller when you are holding the handle straight out, parallel to the ground. Does that make sense? So if you start to close the handle, at the point that it is parallel to the ground (sticking straight out from the roller) the roller should just touch the tire. When you close it the rest of the way it should be at the correct tension.

With that said, I guess that was too tight because it would make the clicking noise so I loosened it a bit. I am not sure how that affects the performance.

Well, turns out the problem had nothing to do with my bike (I think and hope) - Jeff P suggested the following:

Yesterday I picked up my Nike shoes and gave them a shake - yes indeed, they have a couple loose parts in the soles and sure enough they click. I put them on and got on the trainer; I could hear the noise right away. After a few minutes I took the shoes off and the noise went away.

Thanks Jeff!!! I would have gone crazy trying to figure out what was making the noise and the shoes are the last thing I would have thought to check.
