Cleat position (2)

Any idea whether cleat position, forefoot vs. midfoot is better for maximal power production. I’ve got two pairs of shoes, a $50 pair of Diadoras and a $200 pair of Times. The entry level Diadoras have the cleats mounted more midfoot than forefoot yet I subjectively feel faster with them. I don’t have a power tap to measure actual watts.

Not quite sure, but i know that while running when i used to be a sprinter i would run on toes to get more speed, for distance it was more midfoot. This sprint position required more energy but gives more power. Im guessing this would be a similar case for cycling.

I’ve wondered the same thing. Having heard very little on the subject, my thoughts: the further the cleat is place toward the toes, the more muscle (calf) is required to stabilize the foot. So I place mine closer to midfoot based on the assumption that it takes less energy. If you’re a high cadence spinner, you may be more comfortable with the cleat forefoot. Masher; midfoot.

The cleat should be positioned so that the ball of your foot is just so slightly in front of the centerline of the pedal axle.

It’s something like the 3,4,5th metatarsal or some shit that should be in line with the pedal axle. My coach hooks me up with the cleat position and shims.
