I ran across some plastic/rubber cleat covers for speedplays at the LBS yesterday. Anybody ever use these to run in at T1. Then drop them off at the mount line. They were relatively inexpensive so some people might think of them as disposable. I mean what is $10 in the greater scheme of triathlon costs.
I know, if you attach your shoes to the pedals you won’t need them. So that response is unnecessary.
I got rid of my speedplays when I started doing races specifically because they are very difficult to talk in. Also, when you get to the point where you are able to leave the shoes on the bike, I found the shoes would very easily come off in my hand.
Went to Looks and love em. They hold the shoes tight, plastic cleats are not as high or slippery as the speedplays.
I do miss how easy the speedplays are to get into coming off stop lights, but I can live without em.
Just go to the hardware store and get some deck tape (the rubber/sand anti-slip tape that you put on outdoor steps). Cut to the size of the metal cleat cover, and you’re good to go.
I’ve used (and still use) the cleat covers, but I wouldn’t use them at a race.
Let me know when and where you are are racing and I’ll come pick up your $10 “disposable” cleat covers. I switched away from speedplays and sold my used cleat covers for $5-6/pair
