Sounds right. A lot of DNFs; it was a tough race. A number of folks missed the cutoff on the bike (not sure how, because that seemed easy). Several more got swept at the end (12 hours)
the numbers were low, but the race was fabulous. if this race has a full and half 101 distance next year, i’m betting 900 - 1200 total.
i kind of hope they don’t go back to bradenton. i’d like them to pick two new venues in the U.S., and replace bradenton. and maybe halifax as well, we’ll see. i know precisely what venues they should choose in place of bradenton and perhaps halifax, if it was me doing the venue picking.
I knew clear lake would be tough, but I sure did not hear anyone talk that tough.
Anyone done Auburn to comment on the two.
Sure wish 70.3 would put their championship on a course like that. No drafting worries, and sounds like the best man and women
will be standing at the end.
Just out of curiosity, why would you replace Halifax? That’s one that I’m signed up for (since it’s the closest one to where I live and a good place to plan a little vacation around).
I have to say that Tri101 needs to do a much better job of publicizing their race. After doing Epicman last weekend in Lake Placid, I completely lost track of the number of people to whom I had to explain what Halifax 101 was when I told them that was my “A” race that I was training for. You’d think that at a gathering of mostly Canadian Slowtwitch folk that people would have a clue what the Halifax 101 race was.
they need to do a better job of retail marketing. they know that… now. you just have to realize they are knew to doing a north american series. me, i’ve done it, i see all the mistakes i made being repeated. and everybody makes them. that’s why national series are so hard to pull off.
halifax is a maybe. i’m going to reserve my comments until i see what happens. what i would say is that i have confidence in these guys to get better and better every time out, and i think next year is going to be huge for them.
I certainly don’t envy their task of trying to crack the thick scull of Mr. Everyman trilemming who thinks that unless it has an M-dot or a 70.3 stuck to the end of the name, it’s doesn’t exist. From the sounds of it, they are taking the right approach by putting together a top notch event for those of us willing to take the plunge in Year 1 so that we come home and spread the word. I just hope that they are committed and have the financial backing to stick with it for the 2-3 lean years that it is going to grow this thing from the grassroots into the big competitive race series that so many of us having been asking for.
I will tell you that I have talked to a bunch of 101 Cali people and they said that it was absolutely a fantastic venue and well very run race. Kudos to Shannon and the crew. I agree with Dan, forget this years numbers becasue they really do not mean that much. Next year (when people can have advance notice to schedule) they have the numbers.
I personally think that Halifax is going to be great. Slowman has his West Coast bias showing. The East coast needs another venue that is world class and a little travel to BC is no diff then Penticton. I am racing there and I cannot wait to see the bike and run course. Talking to Jamie Cleveland, who went to school there, it sounds epic.
Texas will be great. The RD there is awesome and I have known him for 15 years.
I agree about Bradenton, bye bye. Too many great venues to worry about the issues there.
<< i know precisely what venues they should choose in place of bradenton and perhaps halifax, if it was me doing the venue picking >>
Can you share that info w/ us? I’d be interested to know where else you think would make a nice tri venue.
Or is it in the category of “if you tell us then you’ll hafta kill us”?
I’m sure Halifax is a lovely venue, but it’s in the middle of f’n nowhere. I’ve been there once before, and we had a nice time, and the scenery in NS is just awesome, but damn is that a hard place to get to.
(Taking the Cat across from Bar Harbor was fun!)
It should be part of Maine, as in - you can’t get they-ah, from he-ah.
