First bike was a Team Murray BMX. Then came the Haro FST. My brother had a Skyway, then a Haro Sport. We rode in a pack with other kids on Diamondbacks, PK Rippers, Haro Masters, Sigmas, Dynos, GTs, Mongoose, Redline etc.
I’d trade my Cervelo right now for a mint condition Haro. Ahh, the good old days.
What did you boys ride? Check out www.bmxmuseum.com, I’ll bet it’s there.
I had that bike! Then it was a “Pro Freestyle Tour” and on to a Redline RL20 II…I still almost buy another every time I am at the bike shop they are so cheap (but man back then they cost ALLOT!). My main shop has a kid who rides pro for Kink and has a frame in his name…cool stuff. Nice kid too. He was on the covers of two magazines last month…
That was a sweet ride, my buddy had the Haro. I had a couple Hutch trick Stars, Mongoose Pro Class, Hutch Hollywood and my all time fave was the SE racing Quadangle. I’ve been looking those up on ebay and they go for thousands for a good old school quad.
It’s crazy what the old skool SE Racing and PK Rippers are going for. I raced an MCS Turbo Spyder, my first custom, handbuilt frame. That is the one bike I wish I still had…
the hutch pro star was the alltime dream bike growing up. I had a DP freestyler (British Brand) souped up as a race bike in white with chrome dropouts (uni saddle, cw bars, dia compe brakes) but my Buddy’s Hutch was the sweetest thing… would be a blast to get back on one of these things and take it over some jumps.
As a kid, I went through my BMX factory teams quicker than cereal brands (i.e. - whoever would drive me to the race). Torker, Hutch, Kuwahara, GT, CW…and ended with a lil no-name, VDC. Not too many people knew Voris Dixon and the CW connection. Anyhoo, I have box fulls of stuff and posted a “what is this worth” thread on a BMX forum last year. Within a day, I had 50 offers to buy the frame. Ended up posting it on ebay and rec’d close to $1000. Luckily, I have a few more! Evidently the VDC Changa Long is the Mack-Daddy for the vintage market…with the mint Hutch coming up in a close 2nd.
The vintage BMX market is pretty cool. I’d post a full bike pix, but my parts don’t give the frame justice.
I had more bikes than I can remember from my BMX days. What a great time those days were. I’ll try to dig up some photos to post. A couple of other frame builders: JMC Racing (Black Shadow frame/fork), Robinson, Cook Bros. Loved my Redline Flight cranks, and I thought I was the shit when I got one of the first sets of graphite Skyway Tuffwheels. Liked building custom wheelsets with Bullseye or Phil Wood hubs. Any of you guys from So. Cal remeber racing the Teen Center and Devonshire Downs?
haha… yeah skyway’s rocked… But I loved my peragrine 48’s…
I also had flight cranks on my trick star of all things. they were the shit. Wish I still had that trickstar now.
