Ciamillo Components - Disappointing Customer Service

Ugh, I’m getting totally fed up w/ Ciamillo Components, makers of the Zero Gravity brakes. I paid them for a spare parts kit since I stripped the backnut on one of my brakes. I sent them a Paypal on July 25th and I didn’t get the parts until August 11th. That’s a helluva long time to put some spare parts in the mail.

Then to make matters worse the frickin’ backnuts are too large in diameter to fit my fork and seatstay brake mount opening. Also, the threaded opening is so mis-centered its almost laughable, if I wasn’t so disappointed.

I sent Ted Ciamillo an email on Thursday August 11th, and got a response about measuring the brake mounting holes, I promptly replied the opening size was between 6 & 7mm (it would seem mount holes are standard). Then after I got to work I sent him images w/ the dimensions of the backnuts he sent me. I got no reply after kindly sending him multiple messages asking for a reply to my messages.

Be careful dealing w/ this outfit. I don’t about others experience w/ them, but mine’s has been really disappointing.

Hello Rob,

Firstly, I am very sorry for the delays. We had been running a few men short for last few months and have recently replaced some key people in customer service. Ryan Griffan has taken up this activity for us and she is extremely efficient. As I explained in my email, I would be happy to build you a custom set of backnuts for your bike but I need to get proper measurements. According to what you have shown with your microscope, the measurements are well under standard spec for this diameter and your problem you say is that they are too big. Regarding concentricity, all tapped holes have an illusion of being eccentric because of the interface of the helix with the face of the hole. There may be a small degree of eccentricity which will pose no problem but if it is excessive, I would like to inspect this…

Please send the backnuts back to us so we can double check the diameter with micrometers to make sure your bike is not out of spec. If it is out of spec., we can make a set of custom backnuts for you to get you going. Again, sorry for the delays … we have the causes sorted and there should be no further problems. We appreciate your business.

Dude, I hate to say this but thats not uncommon with any brakes. I’ve had some nuts fit very tight, and some be a little loose. Just take some fine sand paper, put the oversized nut in a drill and sand it down a tiny bit. Be sure to add a bit of lube when you install.

I am totally wrong regarding the backnut diameter for the frame seat stay mount. The backnut diameter for the fork is indeed too large. I have a Reynolds Ouzo Pro fork which uses a proprietary mount opening and the fork will not accept the ZG backnut. I got this information after talking w/ Seven Cycles (I ride an Axiom).

The backnut for the seat stays has a larger opening facing the seat tube and a smaller diameter that faces the rear. When I was initially installing the rear brake backnut it wouldn’t go through the opening. After talking w/ the guys at Seven, it was made clear that there’s only one way the backnut will install, the smaller opening is intentional as to ensure a good fit.

I apologize for my error on the backnut fit. However, I was still disappointed w/ the lack of timely shipping and timely communication from Ciamillo Components. I appreciate Ted’s reply and it appears they’ve made some staffing changes so that this will not be an ongoing concern.

Just be glad you never put down a deposit down or had your hope up for their crankset back in 2006…
