For all you closet therapists…heres a tough one… I strained my calf over a year ago…after many months of rest the pain was gone. After getting back into longer runs, and more intense runs, the pain comes back as if someone were stabbing the lower center portion of the muscle…kinda where the different muscles come together…this only occurs with runs that are long, or intense, doctors wont commit to a reason, and a Rolfing(deep massage) does wonders, but thats temporary…has anyone else experienced this problem? scar tissue? weakness? please advise!
Search on this forum on the title of Ouch, my calf hurts or something like that. You will find a very good discussion of a similar calf pain. Having said that, this describes an injury that hurts from the first few strides. It might give you someplace to start though. Good luck.

Julie Donnelly answers all the posts (muscles are her specialty, she is the Author of The Pain-Free Triathlete) and posts here occasionally. She can tell you exactly what causes it, and how to self-treat it.
I second the recommendation to try Julie’s forum. Her techniques are working very well for me in controlling my ITB and getting more flexible. I also bought a copy of The Pain-Free Triathlete e-book. Apparently Julie’s coming out with a new edition sometime very soon.
Looking at the muscle charts in Julie’s book, there are several muscles that are far away from the center of your calf that could be the cause of the problem. They’re all in the area at the very base of your back and in your butt. If one of those muscles is abnormally shortened, they can cause pain relatively far away, even down in your knee and calf. It also occurs to me that you’re describing the area where your big calf muscle connects to the achilles tendon – maybe you have a case of tendonitis?
Post the question on Julie’s forum and see what she recommends. And if her advice works, you have the option of supporting her by buying her book.

Thanks to all for taking the time to post, this is good stuff for me…I too have had plantars in both feet, related to one another?, i should have figured, will get the massage tool and buy the book.
2 years ago after a long & easy 15 mile run I got a deep pain in the calf. Backed off, returned to running
and went from 40 a week down to a painful 5 a week. This went on for 4 months. I tried massage,
ibuprofen, more massge, stretching, no running etc. I could bike and swim but no running.
Finally went to my chiropractor after 4 months of not going. Told him my problem, he chewed me out
showed me that my spine was completely out of wack. He adjusted me and the next day I went
to my favorite sprint race and ran great. Since then…no problems at all.
May want to look into that direction…maybe something going on and you may need
an adjustment
imanbri,
Any results on that cronic calf pain. Got to thinking today, running with a friend,
ask him his comments on training and other stuff so I asked SUPERMAN about a calf problem.
His comment was" that maybe if you tried putting on your helmet the right way" it would
take away the pain. And he then said "after you ride, make sure you lock your forks down
on the bike rack".
So I asked myself…what the hell is he talking about.
Maybe this helps some
