Okay, here I am at 9pm Christmas Eve putting the finishing touches on a ghetto bike for my 3-year-old daughter. It got handed down from generous neighbors, so I spray-painted it pink and we added some little touches. My wife finished it off. Here’s me working on it:

Earlier, someone posted about lowering the seat and removing the pedals, so that kids can push it around like a scooter. Later, when she’s pushing it around and balancing, put the pedals back on. I’ve since heard, from a patient, that their neighbor’s kids learned to ride their bikes that way at 3yo–WOW!
A custom ride for a 3-year-old. Fantastic! Tell her it looks just like Sencer Smith’s bike. And is probably faster. ;^)
My little one learned to ride this way last spring. He had just turned 4. I kept the pedals on, and had him go down a slight grade with his feet hanging on the ground. He did it for a few days and then started to pedal. I was more excited than he was. He was laughing and pedalling down the side walk and I was running behind yelling and pumping my arms in the air like I had won a stage in the Tour.
He moved up to a 16inch a month later. I’m going to try him on a 20 inch mini or micro mini BMX bike this spring. 20 X 1 1/8 tires, get some road ones made for a recumbent. It comes with a threadless headset, I was going to try to get a small set of road bars.
My wife thinks I’m nuts.
I think this is the true meaning of bike porn. You’ve got one lucky daughter.
