I am here for business and looking for a nearby path or trail to run on. Any suggestions?
Much better running outside than for 1 hour on the treadmill anyday.
I already found a pool, but no luck with a running area.
I am staying close to the Oakbrook Center mall/Oakbrook Terrace area.
I travel constantly to Oakbrook and would love to find some non pavement trails, or at least something better than running right on the streets around the mall.
I used to live in the area. Argonne National Laboratory Park is south of Oak Brook about 4-5 miles off of Route 83 and has a very nice crushed limestone 9-10 mile loop, if I remember correctly. I miss that trail.
I’ve done some work at Argonne National Lab over the years and have also run this trail (is it called Waterfall Glen or something like that?) I highly recommend it!
A short drive on south of ther on Cass Avenue and I55 is the Argonne Natl Lab and Waterfall Glen. Just take route 83 south to 75th Street, turn west on 75th, then left on Cass for about 3 miles just crossing over I55. It is about 9.5 mi loop of crushed limestone and hills that is my favorite trail run spot. There is a nice asphalt path that runs along Cass/Midwest Rd., 31st. Street, all the way over to Fairview/Myers. I don’t know if it continues across 35th. Street like a loop, but I see plenty of folks running on it every morning and evening. In addition, there is the Illinois Prairie Path and the Great Midwest trail that is just to the north of OakBrook, but I am not as familiar with that.
I haven’t lived there for 15 years, but when I did, I used to go to a place that I’m pretty sure was called the Oak Brook Club in Oak Brook Terrace. They had a pool and a small gym, plus they had some jogging trails. The public could use the pool and gym for a daily use fee. At the time, it was the only high-rise building in Oak Brook Terrace, so you couldn’t miss it. Don’t know if that’s the case anymore.
My dad works at Argonne. It’s more like 20 miles from Oak Brook to Argonne on 83/Kingery Hwy but worth the drive, pretty area. If you see the white tail deer falling dead, run away, sort of the canary in the coal mine as it were.
Illinois Prairie path is nice and a bit closer.
Also, check out Graue Mill and the nature preserve there, Fullersburg Woods I think. It’s in Oak Brook proper and has a nice running path, at least it did when I was there last. Don’t go in the river though.
edit: @EJOTT you are correct at 10mi, mapquest returned a Chicago address for Argonne instead of the 9700 one and I didn’t catch it
Prairie Path: Take 22nd/Butterfield west to Fairview/Meyers, head right/north until you cross railroad tracks and you can park at a 7-Eleven and run the path west (my suggestion) for more miles than you need to.
Waterfall Glen is also awesome, and as stated, is only about 10 miles from IL 83 & 22nd.
I take it you found the pool on Jorie Blvd., which is Oakbrook Park District.
If you are game to swim EARLY, come on over to the Hinsdale Community Pool, outdoor 50m, free lap swim 5:30AM-9:00AM M-F until 8/19. AWESOME pool, swim team is gone, so plenty of lanes. There’s a Masters Team that swims early; if you’re good, I’m sure they’d be happy to let you jump in. Probably a little drive from where you’re staying, but IMO worth it to swim outdoors 50m.
Yes, we have used the Oakbrook Park District pool on Jorie Blvd. that has been fine so far but VERY EXPENSIVE for a city pool. $10 bucks to swim and $11 bucks for the gym…the other night we paid $21 each to workout! Yikes! We are from Santa Barbara, CA which is expensive but only $5 bucks to swim in a pool.
We might check out the Hinsdale pool tomorrow.
I just ran around Central Park District/McDonald’s Corp area on the 7 miles of paths. We are going to check out the trails on Sunday for our long run.
Thanks a bunch for all the info.
