Chia Seed-Born to Run

Just got to reading this book Born to Run. He mentions this Chia Seed(like in the pets) and the many nutritional benefits it has. They look numerous.

Anyways I was wondering if anyone on slowtwitch used this seed and had recommendations or if it does indeed work like the author says it does. I’m definitely considering adding this thing to my recovery shakes just to see if it really does work.

Tried it. No noticeable effects.

Took my first crap in the woods during a run after eating some…that was all the performance enhancement I noticed.

I use chia seeds in shakes sometimes on my oatmeal. They are indeed good for you. They are not in any way some sort of “Super Food”! Claims otherwise are just myth and a desire for mystery. Think of them as a better for you flax seed, nothing more. I like their crunch and that they don’t have to ground before eating.

Cj you need to train a bit more or sleep so you can repair and stop posting. Unless u at least have you feet elevated ;0)

Same results as the others mentioned so far. Tried it, but no noticable effect. I believe it has some great health benefits, but I didn’t suddenly feel recharged and ready to run another 20 miles after eating it or drinking it in iskiate.

Chia seeds when soaked retain up to ten times their weight in water which theoretically helps keep you hydrated. I put them in a glass of water and let them soak for about an hour and then down it prior to a workout. The texture isn’t great but not gag inducing by any stretch and they are pretty tasteless. I didn’t notice any surge of energy but I could go long without any cramping or the like.

I think they make my oatmeal taste better, but that’s about the only difference I can find.

There are many great grain / seeds. Chia is one of them. Amaranth, quinoa, hemp etc… are all great as well. I use them a lot in baking or hot cereal. Part of a balanced diet IMO, which is what you need to feel great. I seriously doubt any single food is going to make that great a difference.

Check out Chia Chargers. Really good flavor and even energy for longer than it would logically seem.

Part of my breakfast recipe.

1/4 cup oatmeal… cook.

Add 2Tbl spoon Brown Sugar.

6 Table spoon ground Flax

2 Table Spoon Wheat Germ.

2 Table Spoon Chia Seed paste (about 1 part chia 8 parts water).

they might retain 8x their weight in water, bit that amount to about a quarter cup of water in a really big serving. Not much in the way of hydration.

I just got done reading the book too, thought the same thing and ran out and got some chia. Like many here I haven’t yet discovered their “magic” power but I do enjoy eating it and feel like it’s worth adding into my diet. I typically grab a small glass of water and add 2-3 tablespoons and some lime juice (from concentrate) and let it soak over night and then drink it first thing in the morning along with my coffee and breakfast of choice. I do think I feel full longer and tend not to snack as much. Last weekend I made up a bottle and used it on a 3 hr ride to see how I felt. I think they are better when soaked versus dry and crunchy but it’s just my opinion. On a side note, I couldn’t put down that book. In high school my english teacher called me a “reluctant reader” and I flew through that book in a matter of days.

no performance gains… they did help me crap alot… Super CHIA-CRAP… begged my GF to come see it but no…

Were you yelling “iceberg” from down the hall?

they are very dense and has lots of protein and considered a whole grain with some important amino acids. it is a more sustainable source of calories than many of the other sugar supplements.

last summer (after reading the book as well) I starting sprouting them on a glass jar and using them on sadwitches and salads, they taste similar to alfalfa sprouts but much more nutty, kind like Arugula.

I don’t feel any noticeable difference on performance but it is a good addition to meals and I am sure it does something good, just like most whole grains.

me too- love love love this book- can’t seem to put it down but then I have been to Creel, have been in the canyon with the Tarahumara’s and run some of the trails. This just makes me wanna go back but with Mex having such a terrible drug war we need to stay where we are. The Tara’s come and run our El Paso Marathon every year- it’s a blast to run beside them.

I was that day, had to sacrifice my favorite gloves…too bad.

Your still a dumbass…(pink)

I sacrifice a sock before a glove. I have several mis-matched sets in my drawer and the wife always knows what went down when I come home with only one on.
