Chest tightness and coughing after hard workouts

After hard workouts my chest gets tight and when I take deep, full breaths I get a “tickle” in my chest which induces a cough- an unproductive cough.

My ER doc friend thinks it might be mild exercise induced asthma, but I don’t have any problems during exercise, just afterward.

Can the bronchial tubes be agitated during hard efforts and be causing this?

can be EIA, GERD…either way…medical advice on the internet is not a good idea.

I think your doctor friend is probably right. I also think this is a common occurrence and not anything to get too concerned about. Does it happen more on cold/cool days than warm days?

I’m still waiting for a web site to be developed where I can diagnose myself and then self medicate with prescription drugs. “Wow, looks like my sore back is rheumatoid arthritis… let’s try methotrexate from this drop down menu as a fix.”

I’ve had the same experience after hard races for as long as I can remember. I notice that it’s worse in the spring (when I’m underfit) and it goes away as the season progresses. Don’t think it warrants deep investigation or concern (but I could be wrong).

I experience the same thing- especially on long rides done in the aero position. These long aerobic efforts are vastly different than say running an all-out 800 or 1500m which also gave me the coughing fits.

I posted essentially the same question last year. One suggestion is that it might be due to mild allergies. This might make sense because I rarely have the same problems during winter long rides. I do have hayfever allergies in the spring.

You are young. Don’t worry about it. Just get in better shape.

I have had that occasionally. Never gave it a worry.

I had the same thing for years. Last summer it got worse - I thought it was exercise induced asthma - got full lung function test and it turns out I had “real” asthma and have probably had it for years. Now that I’m on asthma meds, I feel so much better training, am faster etc - my allergies are better too - didn’t get chronic winter cough/sinus infections I usually get. I say get it checked out.

definitely bird flu, definitely.

Very likely one of the above. Recent studies show some asthmatics with NO symptoms of GERD improve their asthma with GERD meds.

Go see your doc or a pulmonologist.

Exercise induced asthma. Have the same thing. I can breathe fine during the race but in about five minutes after I finish, raspy breathing and coughing. Doc gave me an inhaler.
