I think your doctor friend is probably right. I also think this is a common occurrence and not anything to get too concerned about. Does it happen more on cold/cool days than warm days?
…medical advice on the internet is not a good idea.
I’m still waiting for a web site to be developed where I can diagnose myself and then self medicate with prescription drugs. “Wow, looks like my sore back is rheumatoid arthritis… let’s try methotrexate from this drop down menu as a fix.”
I’ve had the same experience after hard races for as long as I can remember. I notice that it’s worse in the spring (when I’m underfit) and it goes away as the season progresses. Don’t think it warrants deep investigation or concern (but I could be wrong).
I experience the same thing- especially on long rides done in the aero position. These long aerobic efforts are vastly different than say running an all-out 800 or 1500m which also gave me the coughing fits.
I posted essentially the same question last year. One suggestion is that it might be due to mild allergies. This might make sense because I rarely have the same problems during winter long rides. I do have hayfever allergies in the spring.
I had the same thing for years. Last summer it got worse - I thought it was exercise induced asthma - got full lung function test and it turns out I had “real” asthma and have probably had it for years. Now that I’m on asthma meds, I feel so much better training, am faster etc - my allergies are better too - didn’t get chronic winter cough/sinus infections I usually get. I say get it checked out.
Exercise induced asthma. Have the same thing. I can breathe fine during the race but in about five minutes after I finish, raspy breathing and coughing. Doc gave me an inhaler.
