Chest muscle torn?

Thinking I pulled or tore some of my right pec. Stupid. Pushing down/laying on a drill when bit stopped but drill kept spinning with my weight presses on it taking chest muscle with it in very quickly. Put a pencil eraser on you wrist and twist, that is what happened to my chest. Darwin award here I come. Hurts to take deep breaths. If I sneeze I literally want to curl into a ball and cry. Moving / breathing / laughing sometimes creates what I would describe as a clicking sound ?? No obvious swelling or bruising, but severe pain looking over my shoulder bending over to pick things up, laying on back and rolling to side or sitting up. I assume not much can be done other than try not to use it so I have not gone to an MD but wife fears I may have done something else plus apparently quoting her “you were literally whimpering last night while you were sleeping I don’t think it is getting better please go to the doctor so you don’t keep waking me up?” She really loves me I don’t remember that and think she is lying because it is too painful to sleep most of the time. Am I being lazy by not going to the doc? Can anything be done other than pain pills that I wont take?

Toodles and thanks

I don’t understand your description of how the injury happened, but chest wall injuries do hurt a hell of a lot. I would personally take the painkillers you are prescribed. Sounds like a cracked rib, rather than a damaged muscle.

It would probably also be worthwhile getting a check with an ED that you don’t have a traumatic pneumothorax. Very simple to check & highly unlikely to have happened, but might need draining if it had.

Personally, here in the UK, I would visit an ED early morning during the week when it is quiet. They may just tell you to get lost, but at-least you’ve checked. I’d also take all the painkillers they offered.

I agree visit a walk-in clinic or ED. Better to be sure. You are probably correct and rest and pain meds are treatment.

I am the type I don’t want to go to doctors because I am afraid they will think I’m a hypochondriac although I never go.

But I say go not only for yourself but to put your wife, who really loves you, at ease.

Wishing you quick healing!

Thanks. I was trying to drill through a metal plate with an electric and drill. The bit caught and that caused the actual drill to start to spin around it. I had my hand on the drill with my chest / body weight pushing down on it at the time so when the drill spun for a brief second my chest skin / nip/ muscle underneath essentially got a large and quick titty twister.

I tore my intercostal muscle (rib muscle) in my chest under my left pec during my first Ironman, I had pain for a few months before I finally went to the doctor because I was worried maybe it was a heart issue since it was directly over my heart. They confirmed it was a torn rib muscle - 10 days of 800mg Ibuprofen 3x day (typically military solution for 98% of issues) and I was good to go. Doesn’t hurt to go to the doc to confirm for peace of mind, better safe than sorry.

I tore several intercostal muscles under my left pec about 15-18 years ago. I was jacked up for several months. I couldn’t lift my left arm above shoulder level for like six weeks. I did it playing golf of all things. I took a big, awkward swing and hit a somewhat buried and hidden tree root. My club and swing came to a dead stop mid swing and it just shredded some intercostal muscles.

Yeah it was no fun, happened during IM Lake Placid in July '14 - finally went to the doctor that December after my husband got tired of me b*tching about it. Didn’t hurt much when working out but would have sharp pains when I was wearing my Normatec boots (since I was relaxing and breathing really deep) or when in deep sleep. Doc said “normally for a pulled muscle we’d tell you to stop working out and rest but since you’re using the muscle when you breath that’s not really an option we want to pursue, hopefully lots of Ibuprofen will do the trick”… luckily it did. Haven’t had any issues since. Though I strained another rib muscle earlier this year during a tough 16-20% grade climb on my tri bike… a week of Ibuprofen fixed it again.

Thought I’d bump this since I just did this again. I hope I’m not jacked up for several months like the last time.

Dude! Quit playing golf, it’s evidently not your game.

I wasn’t playing golf this time. I awkwardly picked something up that was heavier than I thought while my rib cage was pressed against the high back of a wooden chair. Stupid.
