Incredible performance! Super exciting future for her! Did anyone notice she has Hoka on her kit but was wearing Acsics?
Nice spot. Maybe the Hoka contract had just expired but if that were the case you’d imagine they would be off either her website and/or kit for the biggest race of the year. Not a great look for Hoka but hardly surprising.
Scrolling back on her instagram it doesn’t seem like she’s been trying to hide the fact that she’s been using the Metaspeeds for a little while now.
I noticed that too!
I was listening to How They Train with Dan Plews as the guest and picked up this morning right when they mentioned his philosophy that the run matters more in Kona and he coaches his athletes to hold back a bit on the swim and bike to unleash a great run. Pretty much the plan she executed to perfection!
2XU really can’t get their athletes a new kit for the sports biggest stage?
I think most will just assume she was wearing the brand she had on her kit? I know I did until after the race which is actually good for Hoka IMO.
She might’ve had a signed contract to promote the brand through 2022 season, which she did technically, but decided to say F-ck it on actually wearing the shoe for the race.
They had the Hoka guy going on for like 15 minutes talking about the new shoes. Did not matter how much he went on, not good marketing if Sodaro is running and winning on Asics MS Edge.
Will be interesting to see if Hoka has managed to improve their racing shoes. As of 2020, they were miles behind the top carbon plate dogs with their racing option being only as good (often worse for some of the testests) than old school racing flats.
Can’t believe Frodo ditched Asics for Hoka.

Indeed, I just assumed she was on a new Hoka model as the youtube stream did not give enough resolution on my end to really tell what she had on

Exactly, maybe half the folks here on ST recognized them as non hokas and this is the pointy end of the community. The ST forums are a bit of a joke in the industry, no doubt 95% + of folks in triathlon are unaware she wasn’t wearing hokas.
He didn’t, it was the other way around. Asics ditched Frodo

Same…I assumed it was hoka’s unreleased new super shoes until I read this post…
Everyone and their brother new those were Metaspeed Sky’s. When HALF the Pros in triathlon are wearing the same shoe, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist. And that was a huge black eye for HOKA. Makes them look as though they don’t make a competitive race day shoe.
If she is or isn’t still sponsored by HOKA, that was a huge gamble on her part. Could be breach of contract or false advertisement depending which one it is.

Everyone and their brother in the tiny microcosm of ST whiner threads. For general tri population they would have no clue and assume her Hoka jersey meant she was wearing those shoes (even if they cared, most people don’t even care).
From what I gather I think HOKA was the team sponsor that she is a member of. So perhaps like most teams, some athletes are allowed to use different gear, as it is more a team sponsor than a personal one. I really dont know, just seems like it could have been that. And I see Ironman is now photo shopping the logo out now in their releases, really stupid. Just brings attention to the very thing they are trying to cover up, they never learn…

That was my first thought but it seems like HOKA has nothing to do with the BMC team and is listed on her website as an individual sponsor. Where are you seeing releases with the logo photoshopped out?
Not about her shoes and to no-one in particular, but how crazy that her first Ironman win is the World Championships?! She was 2nd in her qualifying race, her only other Ironman. Insane start to what will surely be an incredible full distance career.
It will be interesting to see if she is the new Chrissie OR a one time winner. She raced smart (brilliant for a first time Kona) and is a great talent.
Fun to watch! Nice to have the US win again.
Her coach has raced Kona several times and holds the AG Record here. That’s a lot of knowledge to share with your athlete. He’s also a Doctor and Scientist. He lives and breaths Triathlon. Yes, her first win is surprising but her preparation was nothing short of perfection considering the body of knowledge she had access too.
Yes, coach is great at monitoring sugars and is mostly Low Carb for training. Higher carbs for racing, but not super high. It will be interesting to see if the S Fuels get more interest.
