Cheap Pace Clock Recommendations?

For the sake of convenience I’ve started swimming in the community pool which is 25 yards and has semi-usable lane lines. I’m really struggling to find a good cheap pace clock. Basically, I just want a large battery powered digital clock that displays seconds. I’ve scoured Amazon and Wayfair to no avail but perhaps a fellow 'twitcher here has a recommendation.

P.S. I despise swimming with a watch.

Ipad with alifeproof case?

Cheap if you have one already

I wish I had a recommendation for you. The $185 for the 15" Competitor pace clock is ridiculous, but it’s the only real option.

You might be able to find a battery operated clock that could fit in a gallon zip lock that you could put at the end of your lane.

This would be cool, if you can convert it to battery power Ganxin IN6T1R 1 in. 6 Digits

You definitely don’t want to have a 110v clock on deck.

I use this clock. It is a touch on the small side but it is pretty nice to have separate timers should you need to time a set within the overall swim. I have been using it since December without issue so far.

ETA: The link doesn’t seem to work for me but it is OXO Good Grips Triple Timer and cost $20 from Bed Bath and Beyond.

Outdoors, I usually just set my watch on the edge of the pool. I bought a cheap battery (analog) travel clock and duct taped the back. I plan to try that this summer. I only need the second hand.

I think this 10" wall clock from Cafe’ Press would work. It’s only $27.99 or $20.99 if you give them your email and get 25% off first purchase. I’ve thought about buying one of these myself, but then my pool upgraded their clock. Actually, it would make a cool wall clock also.

I just use my phone with a large-print timing app inside a plastic bag, then prop it up right next to the lane I’m swimming in. Not huge, but does the trick when needed.

I’d go with that one or make my own with a $7 clock movement mechanism, a couple sheets of plexi and a printer.

Holy shit I had no idea swim clocks were so expensive. $400 for a pace clock? Wow!

Right?! It’s almost cheaper for me to buy a large-format off-brand android tablet and put it in a plastic bag than it is for me to buy a friggin digital clock of comparable size!

I’ve thought about building one myself also. I have seen other homebuilt ones at pools made out of wood.

The issues are:

  • getting a movement that can handle the humidity
  • has the torque to spin large hands
  • finding large hands
  • building an enclosure that minimizes the water/moisture that gets to the movement.

Edited to add that Keifer does sell (replacement) movements for about $35.

You can buy a Kindle Fire 7" with a waterproof case for under $100.

I just replaced the movement on a wall clock (normal, not high torque movement) and didn’t have any issues with the torque for an 24" clock. I think even unprotected the movement would probably hold up for at least a year if it was only at the pool when you were.
