Charging an internal Di2 battery

OK, I have Ultegra 6770 Di2 newly installed on my new Venge (bike pjorn below).

Anyway, the LBS did not charge the battery when they built it up and I have a red light on my Junction box at the HB.

Since this is the older 10 spd stuff, there is no charging port at the junction box.

I pulled the battery from the seat tube, but the connection port is a different shape (round) compared to the connection point on the charger.

What am I missing? How do I charge the battery?

Any help appreciated.

As far as I know you need the 5 port junction box to charge the internal battery. That is what I have on my TT bike, 5 port junction and the internal battery. Also, how did you “check” the battery level? Hold the shift lever or did you just hold the round button on the junction box?

Held the round button at the junction box.

My understanding is that the newer style junction box (5 port) does not work with the 6770 series.

Holding the button puts it into “maintenance / trim mode” where you can trim the RD. Holding the shift button will give you the actual battery level, at least for the 5 port junction box.

As far as I know you can use the old Ultegra w/ new ultegra since it is all e-tubes. Same for the NEW Di2, but you CANNOT mix old Di2.

I have 11spd FD, and the internal battery, 5 port junction box, and then the “older” Ultegra 10 spd RD. Everything works fine and communicates.

you will need a 5 port junction box in order to charge that battery it will work with 6770

When you push the button on your junction box that puts you into adjustment mode and the red light will come on,push it again and it will go off.

you check battery level by pushing a shift lever for a few seconds.

you need SM-EW90-B 5port and BCR2 charger

The shop SHOULD have pointed this out to you, knuckle heads

he could also use the 3-port junction—not just the 5-port.

you check battery level by holding down any shift button on any lever or remote shifter.

tetonrider-

You are saying he can charge it with the 3 port? That is what he is concerned about I think, is how to charge the internal battery.

I think he has the 6770 wire harness which is only for adjustment and battery level check
.

Correct.

So what you guys a re telling me is that there is no way to charge the battery w/o changing out my Junction box A?

Sorry, forgot to include the pjorn as promised in the first post.

you are correct sir.
and as someone pointed out the 3 port has the charging port on it since you only need 3 ports for a road set up.

I had a road bike with clip on aero bars and added tt shifters in addition to my road shifters and used a 5 port

That’s correct. You need the A junction with the charging port.

I bought Ultegra 6770 in parts. I then also bought the A junction SM-EW90 along with the internal battery.

The other nice thing about that A junction is you can use it to plug into your computer and re-program the di2 if desired.

Do you have a BCR2 charager? The one that plugs into the 5/3 port to charge the battery? If so you can cut off the male end (the one that plugs into that port on the 5/3 junction) and take one of the ew sd50 wires, cut one end off of that and solder the end of that wire to the charger. Then you can simply unplug your RD (or anywhere you can have an open port on the bike) and charge it up that way.

Thanks all.

I need to double check what Junction B box I have…I believe that I may be able to charge it through that (if I am reading the Shimano stuff correctly, it seems that is possible with the right Junction B box.)

Problem is that the Junction b box is buried in the seat tube.

The good news is that, now that I know how to correctly check the charge, my battery level is not as dire are I thought
